OT: Northern, modern & rare SOUL
Posted by: DiscoVolante ()

Some of the best music ever recorded in my opinion is rare american soul music from the 60's and 70's. More or less rejected then, fortunately the records where rediscovered by british soul lovers. Did anyone here visit Wigan Casino or Blackpool Mecca in the 70's? Please share your memories.

Here are some of my personal favorite tracks:

Cliff Nobles & Co - The Horse

Don Thomas - Come On Train

Frances Nero - Keep On Lovin' Me

Gwen Owens - Just Say You're Wanted (And Needed)

Epitome Of Sound - You Don't Love Me

Jeff Perry - Love Don't Come No Stronger (Than Yours And Mine)

Ann Sexton - You've Been Gone Too Long

Gotta agree with The Snake by Al Wilson; some great vocals on it.

Getting Mighty Crowded by Betty Everett is also one of my favourites. So too, I'm Gonna Run Away from You by Doris Troy, He Who Picks A Rose by Jimmy Ruffin, This Love Starved Heart of Mine by Marvin Gaye, That Did It by Bobby Bland.

I loved Robert Parker--didn't he do Barefootin', too?

Wow I never heard of any of these classic songs!
Keep 'em coming please
I had a Buddah label with Melanie on it (Lay Down Candles In The Rain) on 45 if I recall

It's not that obscure; just have always thought this is such a smokin version.

Did doris Troy also do I'm Gonna Run Away From You? I know the version by Tami Lynn which was a belated hit here in tyhe UK in 72. That was a good year for Tami as she also sang backing vocals on Exile On Main Street.

Proper Marmite tune...... Is it Northern Soul? Dunno, but it was a great floor filler!

A few years ago, while searching through Amazon.com, I found a box set called What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977)

To say it's FULL of what I think are great tunes & grooves would be an understatement. While I'm not sure if this qualifies to this thread, it is one of my favorite tracks on the album:

While not necessarily one of my favorites, y'all will recognize this one:

Peace,
