Can anyone substantiate this story....Supposedly the Stones had just finished a show in 1964 in Minnesota where they were booed and simply not met with the desired response. The story goes that young Mr Jagger was having post concert drinks at some bar in Minnesota. He went outside to have a smoke where he encountered a slightly inebriated man named Jimmy who consoled Mick by stating..."You Can't Always Get What You Want but if you try sometime you get what you need". Can anyone tell me if this is true or urban legend???
Why would he step outside for a smoke, when until recently smoking was always allowed in bars?
If this is the Excelsior Ballroom show from June 12, Mick likely wouldn't have been allowed to drink in bars in the U.S., since he was still technically under age during that first U.S. tour.
According to Phelge's book (Phelge's Stones), he is the Jimmy being referred to when they went to the Chelsea drugstore one day so that Mick could pick up some throat spray for a cold (which was cherry red). Though the song certainly had other, later sources to draw from, that part about Mr. Jimmy was definitely a reference to James Phelge and their trip to the Chelsea drugstore during their Edith Grove days.
