What's On The Flip Side - Australia 1966 film
Posted by: ash ()

This 45 minute film directed by Peter Clifton is listed in James Karnbach's book. He describes it as very rare 16mm b/w documentary about the Stones 1966 Australian tour.He mentions a highlight of this 45 minute film being a live performance of I'm Moving On.
Has anyone (apart from Karnbach) actually seen this ? Certainly doesn't seem to circulate.

Thanks Nicos. I've had an extensive-ish google and found nothing significant. Did get hopelessly sidetracked by the internet though.
If Karnbach is correct (and he isn't always) 45 minutes of 1966 Rolling Stones sounds pretty interesting to me especially when it may include I'm Moving On.

I love the Stones version of I'm Movin On. It seems to encapsulate the power and musical excitement of the pre-Satisfaction Stones, when they were The Greatest Cover Band In The World.

This may be interesting but..............did the Stones ever play I'm Moving On in Australia or indeed anywhere in 1966? or could this be footage from Charlie Is My Darling recorded in March 1965?
I've had a quick check and cannot find them playing I'm Moving On after mid 1965 ?
I could have missed it though.
Anyone know when they last played it?

Maybe the visuals and/or audio for that part part is from an earlier recording?

Yes I think it could be earlier. They certainly played I'm Moving ON in September 1965 but I can't find it after that date and documentaries often pull together different bits of film from different times.
I just got the impression from the initial post that this film had a 1966 live performance actually in Australia, but now I doubt it is actually that.
Anyway, I will be patient and wait and see.
I've waited this long!!!

It would not surprise me if it's actually the live version from the Got Live-EP with some on- or even offstage visuals, much like the Have You Seen Your Mother Baby promo-video.

I'm sure many here know that George Young from the Easybeats is Malcolm and Angus's older brother and produced AC/DC's early albums along with Harry Vanda.

The Easybeats film is interesting too because it captures them recording an album that would, save for a few tracks, remain unreleased.

Footage of recording session at Olympic Studios in 1967? Yes please! smiling bouncing smiley

And I just learned that Harry Vanda (born Jan van den Berg) and Dick Diamonde (born Dingeman van der Sluijs) are Dutch guys.......

"What's On The Flip Side" was a documentary film shot by Peter Clifton. He was covering/filming a popular Australian D.J. Waddy Austin (I think that's his name). Clifton who had been friends The Rolling Stones (remember he made a couple of their promo films) and with Olham, just happen to make this documentary at the same time The Rolling Stones were coming to Australia. D.J. Austin's job at the time was to cover the Rolling Stones arrival to Australia. So as Clifton was following Austin (he was also filming The Rolling Stones), who was attending a press party for the Stones.
The concert footage includes the opening act The Searches. During The Stones concert performance of the film they are being attacked by crazed fans who were just as wild as in the "Have You Seen Your Mother,Baby" concert promo or as in the "Charlie Is My Darling" film.

It's the outtakes of this film that one should really want to see!!!!

Some Stones Australian trivia
*footnote..Jagger wrote the lyrics to rare unreleased song "You Just Made My Day" while in Australia. Keith & Oldham wrote "I Just Want To Be With The Boys" in Australia also..A song about Bob Crew. If you don't know who he is look him up!!
