Enjoyed the series 5 opener very much.

Some interesting plot twists, as well.

Carson a closet cross-dresser ...I never saw that coming.
Daisy hooked on opium............I never saw that coming.
Bates spurning Anna & having a tryst with Lady Isobel ... I saw that coming.

Can't wait for next weeks episode now!

Is it season 3 going on in England right now? I kind of lost interest in the middle of the second season...that Selfridges docu is more in my taste...

Lol,
I thought the same thing. Someone may be toying with our DA love.
At least I hope!

Haven't watched Selfridges and never got into Sherlock (or Mad Men, for that matter). As to DT plot twists, leg and pull spring to mind smiling smiley

;-)

I wouldn't ruin all the fun for all our transatlantic mates...

it does however make a change that they have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for their airing date, whereas it's usually us poor saps in the UK who have to be patient, avoid internet spoilers or (ahem) illegal web downloads.

I'm thinking of you, True Detective, Madmen, Boardwalk Empire, The Good Wife (and my own particular guilty pleasure, Nashville, which doesn't air in the UK for a whole 6 months after the U.S)

VERY thoughtful of you Adrian-L!

In Los Angeles we don't get it until middle of next January.
Damned backwater...If I find out that Kim and Kanye have it
on some "special" arrangement, there will be hell to pay.

On second thought, THEY probably have never heard of "Downton"

Yes, that's the one!
Love her. I loved how she ended up with the french guy at the end of last season..
I thought they would just stick her with the boring guy who loved her, because that's the way real life is...But they went with the romance, and I love that.
stonesrule,
Kim K is a fan of the show, and made noises about wanting to be a 'guest'.
I'm sure that's not likely. I'm actually amazed at how DA has ammassed such a diverse fan base. I've even seen it come up on an NFL message board..
I'm glad I finally joined the party.

Whew! tho I wouldn't put it passed the writers for the party-girl niece to get hooked on opium. But Daisy? egadS

You know, that would be an interesting story line. In that time, both in American and the UK upper classes, opium was considered a like a fine wine, and many of the aristos were junkies. In fact, wasn't it the 1920s that heroin was introduced as a harmless way to unwind? It would be interesting not to play as 'Oh, Lady so-and-so has a drug problem', but rather, she has a hobby...because that's how it was percieved until they actually did become junkies, with the long gloves etc...
I get a kick out of seeing old magazines advertisements for a heroin 'kit', complete with case, syringe etc..
But I wouldn't want to show to be a downer, so to speak.

OK, not going to read this thread any more if the new season has started, don't want to know any details yet! Hope for lots more prime Maggie Smith moments, she's by far the highlight of this show for me. smiling smiley

No argument there about Maggie Smith and she's bang on form already in the first episode of series 5.

Yeah, English people what's to likewinking smiley But seriously I heard it's great and if I ever get past my backlog of shows to watch I'll check it out. On the subject of UK comedy I love "Little Britain". That would be something I'd recommend.

Aboslutely boring. Hate it. A 19th century novel in Netfix way. Ladies and Lords come and go, bla bla, castles. Of course my wife really love it, and I really hate it.

Never watched it stonesrule, but one of my daughter's loves it. She's tried to get me to watch it, but I don't have time right now to get hooked on another series. I loved Upstairs/Downstairs when I was a kid, Dowton Abbey looks similar.

As an American who doesn't get into royalty, I like it! A good dramatic period piece soap opera. Great acting as well.

If you like comedy, try looking for the Early doors series.

Sir Mick Jagger finds Satisfaction with Downton Abbey:

I loved it, and visited the castle last year. The dialogue was completely inane half the time ... "I'm going upstairs to take off my hat." Is that an Edwardian euphemism? Now I find myself inserting "Golly!" into my conversation. And Bates should have hung 'cos he was so boring.

It was a bit like Seinfeld - nothing much happened, both had dead fiancés, an obsession with butlers, and the employers slept with the hired help. The Christmas episodes were the best thing about Christmas.
