I Feel Like Revisiting

Re. 1234 and "Not For Beginners" - the distracted, spitballing mix is fundamental to the album. From his books it was LA and lots of cocaine, so the mix tells that very story.
And NFB? Of course these are sketches; several songs start off as an idea, and instead of coming to fruition, actually meander off into mumbles. But we know that Ron was in rocky shape; a bad alcoholic and beaming up too. So to me there is a nobility in this record; a spirit of perseverance.
these things actually should be understood and never said.

"I Feel Like Playing" is pretty good. "Slide on This" is, too.
I've long felt that Ron Wood should make a lead vocal cameo on the next Rolling Stones album, on a Jagger/Richards/Wood composition.
Too bad it won't come to that, as the Stones don't do new albums anymore.
So let's hope for a follow-up to "I Feel Like Playing".

Really love Ronnie's first four solo albums and still think SLIDE ON THIS has many strong numbers even if it can't touch his solo work from 1974 - 1981. Sure you can see the coke hurting Ronnie by the end of that classic era, but he was still firing on all cylinders.
I FEEL LIKE PLAYING is batting the same average as A BIGGER BANG which isn't very impressive to me. It's dumbed down musically and lyrically. That said, it is an improvement over NOT FOR BEGINNERS. That one is an album whose appeal escapes me. I just hear Ronnie as an old drunk with little sign of the once amazingly talented guy. I've always found that album to be terribly depressing.

I'm listening to the first cut, "Why You Wanna Go And Do A Thing Like That For"....love it!
I can sort understand how someone could feel let down by NFB, but not by IFLP. The writing is pretty strong on IFLP.Quote

It's not really the mix that is at fault in GSN, it is the production; the drumsound, the thin guitars, the types of reverb used. You change that awful snare sound on the album, and immediately we have a way better album.
