Re. 1234 and "Not For Beginners" - the distracted, spitballing mix is fundamental to the album. From his books it was LA and lots of cocaine, so the mix tells that very story.
And NFB? Of course these are sketches; several songs start off as an idea, and instead of coming to fruition, actually meander off into mumbles. But we know that Ron was in rocky shape; a bad alcoholic and beaming up too. So to me there is a nobility in this record; a spirit of perseverance.
these things actually should be understood and never said.

I bought the album on the back of this thread on here and I'm absolutely loving it, so cheers for the tip folks!

I love Ronnie's attitude to life and music: it really shines through on this album.

GREAT album. I only wish we could get a remixed version of 1-2-3-4...

An a remix of "Gimme Some Neck".

"No Anchovies, Please"

That's by far the worst mix I've ever heard, so I definitely agree.

it's still a shame why ronnie couldn't contribute more to a stones cd. if he can do this album basically on his own, and all the others he has done i don't see why (except for egocentrics) his songs couldn't have been used. it's a waste of talent. love this record and slide on this, great feel, raw and beautifully ragged.

"I Feel Like Playing" is pretty good. "Slide on This" is, too.

I've long felt that Ron Wood should make a lead vocal cameo on the next Rolling Stones album, on a Jagger/Richards/Wood composition.

Too bad it won't come to that, as the Stones don't do new albums anymore.

So let's hope for a follow-up to "I Feel Like Playing".

He's getting older though.

Maybe he could call it, "I Feel Like Resting"?

I'm sure it came out around £100.. usual stupid overpricing! i wanted a copy .. but not at that price. The album is very good IMHO (apart from Fancy pants)

Fancy Pants, musically, is brilliant. It's the ridiculous words that ruin it.

Really love Ronnie's first four solo albums and still think SLIDE ON THIS has many strong numbers even if it can't touch his solo work from 1974 - 1981. Sure you can see the coke hurting Ronnie by the end of that classic era, but he was still firing on all cylinders.

I FEEL LIKE PLAYING is batting the same average as A BIGGER BANG which isn't very impressive to me. It's dumbed down musically and lyrically. That said, it is an improvement over NOT FOR BEGINNERS. That one is an album whose appeal escapes me. I just hear Ronnie as an old drunk with little sign of the once amazingly talented guy. I've always found that album to be terribly depressing.

that´s exactly what i think. interesting, that there are so many different opinions. music is soooo subjective...

Re: I Feel Like Playing

There a beauty in everything Ronnie releases - even on the sketchy, half-baked stuff. That's why it can never be depressing to me smiling smiley

LUCKY MAN (or better LUCKY MEN ?) would have been the best Stones-single in years!

It's a lovely mix of Seven Days and Saint Of Me. Shamelessly done, but still great grinning smiley

Kinda like a 'funky Dylan' sound.

I can sort understand how someone could feel let down by NFB, but not by IFLP. The writing is pretty strong on IFLP.

GREAT album. I only wish we could get a remixed version of 1-2-3-4...

An a remix of "Gimme Some Neck".

Drake can you do any studio magic with these? cool smiley

It's not really the mix that is at fault in GSN, it is the production; the drumsound, the thin guitars, the types of reverb used. You change that awful snare sound on the album, and immediately we have a way better album.

Baker should have been sentenced to do time for those sounds (drums and guitars, mainly) smiling smiley

I've never heard so many good songs (just listen to the Barbarians-live album) sound like pure shite before...
