The night they played with the Beatles.

I know they found a way around it, but the Beatles played last after all...

I think this was the only concert that the Beatles & Stones were on the same bill for: the Royal Albert Hall, London, September 15th 1963 for the “Great Pop Prom”. They also appeared together 3 times later, at the New Musical Express Poll Winners’ Concert Parties, on 26th April 1964, 11th April 1965 and May 1st 1966 (incidentally the last time The Beatles played “live” in the U.K.), all at Empire Pool Wembley.

I thought this thread was going to suggest they become an opening act for another artist. I couldn't believe what I was reading. haha

Arguably their last appearance as an opening act was the Hurricane Sandy benefit on 12/12/12. They dropped by to play two songs in the middle of the evening on their way to the Newark show the next night.

During the (second?) UK tour with the Everly Brothers, I believe things changed in a few gigs

Because of the Stones mania, Stones were first at the bottom of the bill, then in the middle, and finally the Everly Brothers opened for them... I guess I read that in Life.

You mean a free concert doesn't count as a live gig?

It was outdoors and to the general public. It even snarled traffic and attracted crowds, so much so that the police were called to put a stop to it.

Now exactly how was this "free" "concert" advertised to the general public (unless you were able to scale the buildings opposite for a view, like the bowler-hatted gentleman in the film) other than if you happened to be walking along the road or listened to Radio London at the time. Were seats available....no. Were tickets sold....no. Were the press there....yes.....conclusion being .....jeez, I shouldn't have to spell it out. The whole thing was a publicity stunt, including the police "stopping" the show, which had been rehearsed beforehand. Billy Preston just happened to be passing by, I suppose.
