OT: Lynyrd Skynyrd/J.J. Cale - "They Call Me The Breeze"
Posted by: stonesrule ()

J.J. Cale was admiring of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd Band's version of
"They Call Me The Breeze."

If you saw LS performing it or have heard it on one of their 70's albums, what are your thoughts?

Love the live Skynyrd version on One More from the Road which is actually the first version I ever heard in the mid '70's..
Shortly after that I heard the original, and I have to say it's hard to beat the laid back style of J.J.Cale. His is the definitive version imo.

Also like the Lynyrd Skynyrd's version, in fact my favourite.
Very rock'n'roll spirit and a very good one to be played on guitar.
The intro is great and the solo too, Is it Gary Rossington's part ?
anyone knows ?

Love Cale and LS's versions. I don't like Johnny Cash's version, as John Carter Cash turns up on it, whereas it would have been better without him.

I have to agree with hairball....JJ Cales version is hard to beat. Saying that the LS version was great in it's own way; almost a completely different tune, they definately made it their own. peace

Naturalust...YES!

And that is the magic of fine songwriting combined with inspired musicianship.

Skynyrd's version and the delighted reception it got at Knebworth can be found on YouTube.

I'm going to agree with Naturalust & stonesrule. On paper it may be the same song. In performance, two different songs, both of which I enjoy.

Coincidence for me to see this thread this morning... On Friday, my drummer and I augmented a local duo for their gig (the club wanted a band, not a duo) and we did the JJ Cale version of "The Breeze". Saturday night, we had a guitarist sit in for a couple of tunes with our band and the Skynyrd version was played. Kinda fun to get to play both in such a quick turnaround.

Peace,
Mr. DJA

Grew up on the LS version - was lucky enough to see them twice before 1977.

Later on heard JJ's version.

Love them both.

Same thing with "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" (JJ vs. Clapton - both very nice, in both cases).

Don't want to get too off thread here but another great songwriter who has had tons of folks cover his tunes is Willis Allen Ramsey. He reminds me of JJ Cale in that respect. Strangly almost all the tunes were on one record he did in 1972 while borrowing Leon Russell's studio.

stonesrule and mr_dja I think you'all would really dig this guy. The tunes Satin Sheets and Northeast Texas Women are particularly sweet with the later being one fine example of jug music at it's best. I can just imagine Skynyrd turning one of his tunes into their own classic. peace

Briefly off topic...

Thanks Naturalust! You called it! I just listened to a minute or two of a couple songs on youtube through my single ear telephone headphone here at the office and can assure you that I'll be doing more searching tonight when I get home! Thanks again for the turn-on! smileys with beer

Peace,
Mr DJA

L.S. version is amazing, over the top. JJ Cale is like Dylan or Hyatt the songs are a perfect vehicle for interpretations. That being said, E.C.'s version is easy to listen to but just as easy to turn off...
