999 refers to a stamp of purity for bulk heroin.

The cryptic drug references in a song are soooo 1971. Keith, move on! smoking smiley

The very title, to any Brit, would immediately convey the connotation of EMERGENCY.

The second, (though mot secondary) connotation that emerges from the lyrics - is the monetary one - deals.

A find the third one of Heroin calibre interesting and highly probable - and it coyly links in with the Deals meaning.

Ergo ..... interweaving layers of meaning and association.

Pure Genius.

His last great riff and a truly stupendous riff outro.

(That whole album is genius in its apparent sparse simplicity producing a powerful unified whole).

I'd say that all the posts here answer 'correctly' where there really isn't a correct answer. For a Keith lyric and a title like this he surely didn't sit down and consciously write about what "999" means to him. There's the riff, and there's a microphone, so he started singing.
Afterwwards it remains to read sense into it, and patch the words up. To me it looks like it's about paranoia, money, speed of living, volume.

It is the esoteric number accorded to the planet Venus.

It's the UK emergency number, like 911.

What he said.

Really. People continue with these wacky posts even after someone gives the answer in the third post. It's the same as calling 911 in the US, where Keith lived (England). It's what keith said when the song came out. That wasn't a guess, it was the correct answer.

Actually during a radio interview show promoting the record at the time when the interviewer asked Keith he said 999 was the emergency number for UK, he also mentioned that it was 666 upside down and made some off the cuff comment about the monkey,,,something like, "you can't shake that monkey y'know it takes time then he laughed (or something like that). But he made clear reference to the emergency # and 666 upside down, with an allusion to the drug reference. It may have been Rockline.

For the last time. The British emergency number is indeed 999, but nobody here that I know ever says "nine ninety-nine" when talking about it. It's nine-nine-nine. Keith, being English, knows this as well as I do, so if he is claiming that that's what the song's about - he's diverting attention from some other meaning.

Great performance of the song. At the end Keith says, "Nine-Ninety-Nine it's the price you gotta pay." It sounds like, as someone metioned earlier, the the 999 origin of the song at least could be a send-up of how things here in the US often end in a price with three 999s.
