Don't Tear Me Up appeared on the radio this morning.
What can be said?
Is this just simply Jagger's best solo track?

My only complaint about it is he should have saved it for the Stones.

This is indeed a great song and would have improved Voodoo Lounge immensely.

We have discussed this before, haven't we? cool smiley

The band on this song plays differently than the Stones, but are sounding very good.

Could Stones even have pulled it off?

Great song from a great album, i have the cd single and there's a cool blues on the bonus tracks featuring Gary Moore, Everybody Knows About My Good Thing. A good contender for Mick's best single release though i've always loved Hard Woman To Please also.

Great track, but there are many other Jagger solo songs I prefer.

Great track, but a bit straightforward as it lacks some of Keith's "fairy dust", i.e. some more complex chords like those you see him adding to "Mixed Emotions" in the video snippet.

luv don't tear me up. Also, Id like to hear what the Stones could have done with Sweet Thing. I think it could have been a highlight of the VL tour.

Ah but Keith added his fairy dust to that awful A BIGGER BANG song. I can't even remember the name of it. Awful.

Don't Tear Me up is by far my favorite Jagger solo track but I have always maintained that the song begs for Keith to play on it. This would have been a great Rolling Stones track.

For me the absolute shining star is Memo From Turner but there are several beyond that. On Wandering Spirit, I think I prefer Hang On To Me Tonight, Out of Focus, the title track, Angel in My Heart and even have grown to like Sweet Thing more.

There are fewer on the other albums, but they'd include Old Habits Die Hard, Hard Woman, Secrets, Just Another Night, Party Doll, Throwaway,
and of course Blue is excellent.

So, while I do think Don't Tear Me Up is excellent, the performance of the song and Mick's singing is stellar, I don't thing the song itself is as good as a lot of the others.

EDIT - and of course the excellent Superheavy, without mentioning a particular song, 50% of that album would qualify as well.

A recording of my dog's flatulence would have improved Voodoo Lounge.

Well that may have seemed obvious, but it could also have been in G, as in gas or B as in break wind, or C, as in cut the cheese

Above all else I appreciate clarity.

Love the song. I don't think the Stones backing Mick could or would have pulled it off. Though Mick writes his songs and Keith writes his, I am guessing that once a song hits the studio, compromise and limitations (some good, some bad) affect the final product. If Keith plays a riff his way, if Mick going to argue with him and get him to change it? Probably a lot easy to tell a hired hand to change how he is interpreting something than Keith (or Charlie or Ronnie).

I once heard a singer/songwriter give their reason for doing a solo record as they wanted to make a record where they didn't have to compromise their vision to fit what the band wanted to play or how they wanted to play it. I imagine compromise gets to be a drag after a while...lol I know in 30 yrs of marriage it's a challenge some days!

Never understood this fascination with WS. I have given it a try many times after I read this posts and it is always the same conclusion for me: I would rather listen to a compilation of the worst stones songs than to listen to this souless session musician snoozefest.

Anyone with me here?

That would have been "Let Me Down Slow" to which Keith said he had added some "fairy dust"...not the worst song on the album by far !

I think my problem with "Don't Tear Me Up" is that like "Too Tight" (likely a Keith song) is that it's a straight tuning so it sounds a bit "simple", unlike pretty much anything you play with an Open G tuning that's going to "tickle" the ear somehow, well except "Don't Stop" I suppose ;-)

I remember whispering Bob Harris featuring Wandering Spirit, and especially Don't tear me up, and loving it, on his night time show on Radio 1 all those years ago.

Hearing it made me go and buy the album, and I have played it to death!

I would love to say don't tear me up its Micks best song...... but the competition is immense.

I also adore Memo from Turner and Blue among others.

The best songs the The Stones didn't write IMHO

What a drag it is gettin' old

This song, which I've never heard previously, does nothing for me. It has vague connections to Out of Control and others I can't put my finger on. It sounds 'Stonesy' without the brilliance. The crappy bass sounds the same as if has since 1994.
