interesting story here

note how they tried to get around paying Wyman by proposing a later version of the song be used.

"I also found out later that Jagger and Richards did not always see eye to eye on the deal. As Brad indicated, Jagger was less inclined to commercialize their music in this way. I was told he was especially ready to just forget the deal when we made it clear we needed the original version but that he did not want to piss off Richards over it because Richards wanted or needed the money."

A great deal of this sounds like bollocks.

They are the biggest commercial rock band on Earth so Jagger not wanting to apparently "commercialise" their music in this way sounds like rubbish.

Richards "needed" the money. No doubt. Must have been down to his last hundred mill in 95.

Jagger not wanting to do it cos he may have had to give Bill a cpl of bucks. So clearly instead of sharing in 10 mill or whatever he'd rather take nothing. Makes sense. Most of thius article is on the nose to me.

It sounds to me like a routine that most long-established partnerships or marriages use - each blaming the other one for a decision they are both fine with, but don't want to be seen as responsible for.

Oh yeah - I didn't want to let you have the original, but Keith needs the money..

The bit about Wyman and Jagger etc getting less money because of it does not surprise me at all. Which is hilarious considering they'll blow millions on stupid stage shit...

I do not buy the Mick didn't want to commercialize it and that Keith needed the money. That is just crap - invented by MICK.

I don’t believe it either. This clear statement is also quite clearly lies; what is true is that Jagger invented it or planted it or Jagger made him do it. Keith doesn't care about money. He has always been the “you can have the money pal kind of guy”. He has “integrity”. When Keith was working on Life, it was actually Jagger who demanded that Keith write up even more junk about Jagger. Jagger even threatened him when Keith was reluctant. Then he (Jagger) demanded a % royalty from the sales of Life as his share. Keith’s share actually went to charity. Jagger/Richards work in mysterious ways.

Jagger not wanting to commercialize their music? Odd, as he doesn't seem to have any problems licensing Gimme Shelter.

It isn't. They commercialise a lot but they rarely do commercials.
MJ: "I mean, I'm not against them per se, but we don't do them that much. We do a lot of film licensing. We get lots of requests, and I usually say yes. It's a great business. You have a sort of price that you like to keep to, unless it's a low-budget film and it's a really interesting film--then you can make a deal maybe."

The bit about Wyman and Jagger etc getting less money because of it does not surprise me at all. Which is hilarious considering they'll blow millions on stupid stage shit...

They don't "blow millions on stupid stage shit"; they're deductable costs.
And why not use a live version so you don't have to pay BW...it's just smart thinking as they would do in any business.

Richards "needed" the money. No doubt. Must have been down to his last hundred mill in 95.

Keith doesn't care about money.

He does care. A lot.

KR:"The whole business thing is predicated a lot on the tax laws. It's why we rehearse in Canada and not in the U.S. A lot of our astute moves have been basically keeping up with tax laws, where to go, where not to put it. Whether to sit on it or not. We left England because we'd be paying 98 cents on the dollar. We left, and they lost out. No taxes at all. I don't want to screw anybody out of anything, least of all the governments that I work with. We put 30% in holding until we sort it out."
"I watch the [Dow] go up and down and wonder. I have a small portfolio. I find things I love, like houses--bricks and mortar. Nothing wrong with a bit of land. I've invested in my friends' projects. And there's Rupert. He is a great financial mind for the market. He plays that like I play guitar. He does things like a little oilwell. And currency--you know, Swiss francs in the morning, switch to marks in the afternoon, move to the yen, and by the end of the day, how many dollars? That's his financial genius, his wisdom. Little pieces of paper. As long as there's a smile on Rupert's face, I'm cool."

The article talks about the $14 million rumor but Microsoft paid $4 million.
