OK... Time for the updating of the uneducated (me)...

While I am happy with the USA victory yesterday, would I be correct in my observation that they really didn't look that good? It seemed to me that for the majority of the "middle" of the game (minutes 15-75) that Ghana seemed clearly to be the better team and the USA really didn't look all that good. I know that the US had a couple of players injured and were seeming to be in a "protect the lead" mode of play but their passing, synchronicity, etc. just didn't seem to be of the level of many of the other teams I've seen on TV recently. Am I accurate in my assessment? Based on what I saw yesterday, other than the actual result of the game, it's hard for me to be all that optimistic about the USA's chances.

Peace,
Mr DJA

I’m, admittedly, a fair weather fan of soccer. I pull for the US (my home) and Germany (my favorite spot in Europe). I was pleased that I actually knew who Thomas Müller was before he had his hat trick.

The World Cup is an event that I really enjoy. However, it doesn't lead to me wanting to go to a Philadelphia Union game.

Correct, they clearly "optimized" the result, befitting from a very uninspired team of Ghana too. The World Cup has to be the competition where there are the fewest (as in none) surprises * in the end so I'm not sure what you were hoping for, but the chances of the USA (or any other non previous winner honestly) of winning the WC (or even playing the final) is close to zero, well zero actually.

* If you look at the stats, the last time a non-multiple winner or host country (France in 1998, Argentina in 1978, England in 1966) didn't win the WC was in...1958, the first time Brazil won! It also helps to have the best player of his generation (Zidane for France, Maradona for Argentina, Pelé for Brazil, etc...).

Anyway, I need to review my predictions for today's games to see if I can do better than yesterday!

I didn't see the game, so I'm not really in a position to comment... ;o) But I'm always there when people want to get educated!! =o))

All *BS* aside: first games on tournaments like this are never a good indication about the actual & genuine quality a a team, nor about the condition it is in. (P.S.: remember Brazil was quite lame too, at least imo.) Stress, nerves, you know the drill. And on top of that: Ghana is a really good team - one of the best African sides, these days. So no shame nor harm in them getting the better of you, for a (considerable) while.

That said: I consider the group Germany - Portugal - Ghana - USA as one of the toughest, ànd most underrated groups in these final stages of the tournament. I also genuinly believe each side of these 4 has an (almost) equal opportunity to push through to the next round; and that their opponents in the next round will have a mountain to climb...

I always like Les Bleus, with two countries with heavy records of cheating in the world cup, Italy and Germany, the French have been knights in shining armour despite the French finding they might have to resort to some tricks now and then as well to keep up with other countries. Spain, despite that bad loss too vs. Netherlands has always been sporting vs. those other 2 countries. 2010 of course, France was horrible. It is also important how a team wins.

Thanks to both gotablouse and RoughJusticeOnYa for your insight. Also fahthree for reminding me of the term "fair weather fan". That's me when it comes to futbol.

Interesting to hear how dominated this tournament is by "the old guard". Sounds like team USA better get hoping for another host bid!

Hopefully the US can manage to at least not look bad vs. Germany. I know that the US has slim (at best) chances of being much of a factor in the tournament but I hate it if/when "my" team looks bad regardless of their doing it to themselves or having it done to them. Nice to know that Ghana is regarded as a good team - makes me understand what I seeing yesterday a little bit better... Even if I am only a fan every 4 years or so, it's a lot more fun to see your team at least play well, regardless of the outcome.

Thanks again for to my tutors! I'm sure Ill be back for more instruction before the tournament ends!

Peace,
Mr DJA

WTF...some people just feel the need to go negative. Was that necessary to show your love of France?

They were ok...I thought Ghana dominated through most so I think they were lucky to get the victory.

It will be tough for US vs. Portugal or Germany.

I like the USA fans commenting here! No joke, they try to understand the esencia of the game.
IMHO USA is trying to get higher each World Cup and win some respect and they are doing it good. I guess USA will pass the round on second place after Germany.
thumbs up

Portugal will be extremely tough for the US to get past, and I don't think they could manage Germany.

If they were in another Group they'd have had a far great chance to move to the next stage.

For most most of the game, the US team could not keep the ball. They are lucky to have scored so early. It will be interesting to see how they play without Jozy.

Given the fact that Ghana is ranked much lower than the USA, then Ghana should lose.

But it's a fact that teams like Spain, Portugal, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Belgium, even England are not only ranked higher but that (as most World Cup experts would say) but simply all around better teams than the USA.

So if they struggled to victory over Ghana the chances USA has to go all the way are not good. Hate to be a defeatist, even though I'm rooting for America.

But I guess I'm just enjoying the games, and I'm happy to see everyone is getting into it (media & fans), especially here in the NYC metro area.

Wow, that was quite a game, Australia will come back stronger the next time round! Well if they beat Spain and Spain beats Chile tonight they could still make it...

What is your favorite mid fielder combination?

Australia is way down in the FIFA rankings but Netherlands barely edges them.

At the Confederations Cups, 2009, USA not only beat Spain but ended their record-setting winning streak of about 34 straight wins or however many it was.

[eloratings.net]

Costa Rica defeated Uruguay, who is pretty far up in the FIFA rankings as well. Mexico drawing the host Brazil.

But this USA team is much different than the one who beat Spain. We could advance but it has it's weak spots.

Just switched on TV and World Champions Spain are losing 1-0 to Chile.

Feel they will get into the game soon and win 2-1 maybe.

Lose tonight and Spain will be out I think.

Chile's first goal was great. Wow, Spain really has their work cut out for them now, down 2-0 with minutes left in the first half.

Well then, to hell with the FIFA rankings - if Chile wins then anything seems possible.

In 1950, that Cup USA went to where they upset England at Belo Horizonte, USA also led Spain to the 81st minute, 1-0 and Spain scored 3 goals in last 10 minutes.... so we will see.

I've met nice people from Chile, invited me in for some South American styled coffee, so they are decent folk.

Not sure, Spain has very good young players like Illarramendi, Isco or Thiago. They failed to integrate those players into the team yet.
