Billy Preston

Did anyone else see him on American Idol last night? He's lost his teeth and didn't replace them! He sang some lame ballad with one of the contestants. I tried to explain to my wife that 30 years ago he was a big part of the Stones concerts and that he played with the Beatles etc.. after watching him, she was not impressed.

I felt bad for him.It was sort of embarrassing. Maybe he could go on tour with the Stones and get his chops back.

Lynard Synard was on too....those boys haven't missed too many meals! There's a lot of Southern cookin' be eatin' with them!

"Lynyrd Skynyrd was on too....those boys haven't missed too many meals! There's a lot of Southern cookin' be eatin' with them!"

Well, all the meager ones vanished in the flight accident back in 77, right?

I did not watch Idol but even without I can only imagine BP in that milieu. Hate that guy. Already his silly mugging and that annoying rocking back and forth with his legs kicking up and down like some monkeyed jumping jack when he playes. Thing is he has played some great music. "Get Back", his tune on the Bangla desh concert which steals the show for a while. With the Stones it's a bit different. I hated him while there, right? His dance with Jagger, that fag bit was embarrassing. His singign on LYL etc got to be too much. Then he got his own spot IN a Stones show, not BEFORE. And THEN he starts to play one of those portable monophonic screeching Synth jobs with the pitch bend full blast on JUMPING JACK FLASH. The Nerve! he had to go. "Melody" didn't sit right with me for a long time.
But now looking back, and experiecing the Leavell era; just witnessing how much worse things can be, I see juch good in ole Billy Preston.
Anyone remember that tune with Suyreeta (sp?) where he goes reeeal deep "Darling with you I born agAAAIIYN..."

I was amazed the Stones cut Billy so much room when he toured with them. He was a great player, but giving him a few songs as front man with the Stones as his backing band? What were they thinking? I always liked Stew, Nicky, Mac much better. Synths should be buried for the rest of time.

Billy Preston's performance in the Concert for George is amazing. This was the concert for George Harrison that took place in London, available on DVD and CD.

No doubt that Preston stole the show at the Concert for George...which was fantastic.

That's what he sung at Idol last night.

That was a classy concert idea by George, and yes Billy Preston was the man that night. People also forget how good Leon Russell was as well.

I think I read in Chet Flippo's book that Billy did his stuff to give the Stones a break becuase they were playing extra long shows.....longer than they had ever done before.

I thought he sounded ok last night. I liked him when he toured with the Stones. Good comedy and his playing is really good. I mean, Keith wasn't much of a foil for Jagger back then. Too messed up

Where's Billy...Billy's Gone...Billy?

I think you guys are talking about different concerts. Concert for George was a couple of years ago in honor of Harrison. Filstan - you must be referring to '71 Bangladesh show - 'cos Leon wasn't at the Concert for George.

T and A is correct. Billy played both of those terrific shows and Leon of course was at the Bangladesh concert. I have read some positive reviews of Leon shows recently. He still plays lots of gigs. Harrison always had good players around him, although I was never a big fan of Dave Stewart productions. I really miss George.

I have a recent torrent of a Leon show that I snatched but haven't listened to yet. I think I've heard he has a phyical disability that precludes him from moving around much, but imagine he still tickles the ivories very nicely.

did leon play on any other stones song besides Live with Me?

On one of Leon's early albums he did a song called Roll Away the Stone? I think Bill and Charlie may have played on this. Sounded very Stonesy. Otherwise, I don't think he played officially on any thing else. Hard to say though, guys like Dr. John and Cooder were on various tracks and were not always given proper credits. Early Leon albums were fantastic. Check out his productions with Freddie King via Shelter Records.

Well Leon showed up in the Stonescamp for Let it Bleed. Then Bill Wyman enlisted him for his first solosessions. I read interviews re. Monkey grip and how nervous Bill was. he siad he was fraid of bringing in Leon because leon was notorious for usurping the session. He does strike me as kind of a boss dude. But in the Mad Dogs and Englishmen he RULES! That was probably one of the greatest pure rockbands ever. The Exile spirit is alive with them. In the Bangla Desh Concert Leon and Billy were hot. Leon did the fabulous medley of JJF - Youngblood and Billy jumped up for "That's the way God planned it" and worked the stage like Jagger. BP has stated that he felt for this mega occasion everyone on stage was behaving far to restrained so he wanted to instill some life. Which he did. Leon put out some good albums in his career such as "Carny" and the triple Live album. BP never really did anything that good. Except for his stint with the Stones, which started out good enough. But as someone else said it was amazing that he actually got the Stones as a Backup band for a couple songs. I justr didn't like the way his being a great foil for Jagger turned inot a big head. His vox on "Ain't too proud", "Get off my cloud" got obnoxious. Granted it wasn't only his fault. In 75/76 every second word from Jagger';s lips was "whadd we say Billy..."

I always prefered Billy's playing to Chuck's.
Remember Billy had a lot of hit records at the time,
so he wasn't somebody they dragged off the street.
I will admit the synth stuff was a bit much.
Besides "giving Jagger a rest" he also played a few songs on
George Harrison's tour the year before (which I saw), so they may
have gotten the idea there. I've said it before and I'll say it again,
the best keyboard lineup for this tour would be Billy and Mac.
Mac for the R&R stuff, and Billy for the soul/R&B stuff,
and double up on piano and Hammond when necessary.
I saw Billy backstage at Keith's "Main Offender" gig in LA.
He was standing all alone. Nobody recognzed him or talked to him
'til Freddy Sessler went up and said hello. Can't remember why I didn't
say anything.

Chelsea wrote "In 75/76 every second word from Jagger';s lips was "whadd we say Billy..."
now it's "What do we play next, Chuck?"

Billy is lucky to be alive. He had a kidney transplant and his body rejected it in the past few years. The woman that donated the kidney sued him. He also was in jail during part of his health crisis. He's had a strange, up-and-down life. So, I say good luck to Billy, and it's good to see him out there. He has a lot of talent, even if some folks don't appreciate it.

BTW, what was wrong with the "fag dance"? They were just having fun (and it's not like such things are foreign to either one of those guys).

Saw Billy 2004 in a Clapton concert and he (Billy) was in a fantastic form: he really can play anything (on piano and keyboards). And he is always in a good mood. Fine to watch and listen to. A team player.

Hey I think that is a bit strong. Chuck has a nice beard and a hell of an attitude. He kicks it!
