most listeners may not be able to analyze/discuss the mix the way Mathijs and some others can, but i don't think that means they aren't reacting to it. i sure am - i can't even imagine not responding to it. it's a purely animal reaction, just like to the beat.

I will give Don Was credit for bringing back some sounds
they hadn't used in years (guitars through Leslie speakers, harpsichord, strings).
But I think where he failed was trying to get an EOMS feel with
just the basic band. He shoud have used Some Girls as a yardstick and not EOMS.
I'm talking about sound now, not songs. I agree with Mathijs about the drum sound.
Kimsey got (gets) a much better drum sound. Especially regarding Charlie's Ufip china
(witness She Was Hot) then compare it with, say, Sparks WIll Fly (turn up the fader
on the China crash). That being said, for some reason, I prefer VL to SW, which
was a Kimsey production. To me, the tunes on SW are good alone, but placed
together as an album just doesn't' seem to flow right to me. Whereas VL
has an "album flow" to me. I think VL would have been a much stronger album
had Kimsey mixed it (or Bob Clearmountain). MInd you, I like VL. It does seem
to run out of gas about 2/3 of the way through, though.
