Rock Lobster!

Maybe it's just for sentimental reasons, but I've always been partial to REM's debut LP Murmur.

Boston's first album could just about double as a Greatest Hits album.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Total agreement on this album. An amazingly recorded and mastered album. The sound separation between right and left is astounding. Listening to it with headphones is a must. The half speed master vinyl version is the way to go. Stay away from the CD issues. They sound muddy to me ears and looses much depth.

The Cars' first album was amazing. Also Liz Phair's "Exile in Guyville". And how about Rod Stewart's first album?

as always just my opinion but i'd like to add

kiss- self titled. strutter, cold gin, deuce, firehouse, nothin to lose, black diamond. this album is better than destroyer

the band- music from the big pink. an argument could be made though that the bands 2nd album, self titled was better but i like this one the best

btw whoever said THE WHO, wtf? tommy, sell out and who's next are all easily better than the debut

Since "debut" albums are being included for artists from already established bands, then it would seem that Eric Clapton has had the most amazing run of any artist in terms of debut albums.

but do you think fresh cream or claptons self titled are the best releases by those artists? isn't that what the thread was asking? if the 1st album was the best.

Someone before mentioned the cars first release, yes that is their finest work...but that ain't saying much.

<<isn't that what the thread was assking? if the 1st album was the best.>>

No, that isn't what the thread was assking.

It wasn't assking anything actually, as I didn't see any question marks. It just said "amazing" debut albums.

And Fresh Cream was pretty amazing, and was the most anticipated album at that time, because this was the first supergroup.

Also, one song from the "Eric Clapton" album, Let It Rain, was played on regular heavy rotation on U.S. rock radio for 15 years after its release, and considering the album yielded no top 40 hit singles, I'd say that alone lives up to the thread title of "amazing", but I realize you were only assking.

Same for whoever mentioned the Stones. Yes it's a great debut album but as we all know they evolved and have made classic albums years after that.

I'm also partial to Neil Young's first album, with Jack Nitzsche doing the arrangements.

Can I cheat, and mention Stills/Kooper/Bloomfield's Super Session ?

Furthermore, Paul Butterfield's Blues Band on Elektra: the one with Born In Chicago.

Also, what about I've Got My Own Album to Do by Ronnie Wood: it's a great debut solo album ?

Kristofferson by Kris Kristofferson also springs to mind, as it has all his standards on it, i.e. Help Me Make it Through the Night, Bobby McGhee, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down, For The Good Times, Darby's Castle etc.

sorry i edited my post just now.

I also feel like Aerosmith first record is really good; I don't listen to the other Aerosmith's albums that much but that first one was given to me long time ago and I listened to it a lot. I love the guitar tones and the songs. Like with Led Zeppelin it's grounded in blues and rock and roll and that is probably why I like those records more than what LedZep and Aerosmith produced after their debuts.Jeff Beck goes in that category too. Not to overthink when creating rock and roll music because the young, fresh and creative juices are there, spontaneously coming out (don't need to shake it endlessly for weeks, months even years) makes for amazing records.
Rock and Roll,
Mops

Hello.

It's been mentioned a coupla times on here, but the first Stone Roses album really is the business. It may take more than one listen, but it is, ultimately, well worth it. Brilliant tunes.

Declan.

Hmm, dunno about Love. That's a fantastic album, but Forever Changes is such a classic. I'd rank that as their best.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Pretenders yet. I thought their first album was excellent. Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan was a great debut too.

I agree with all the choices so far. I think if I had to list, say, only five all-time great debut albums, (which doesn't necessarily mean it was the artists' best, just that they hit one out of the park on the first try) I would give, in no particular order,

Led Zeppelin 1
The Doors 1
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
Velvet Underground and Nico
The Beatles - Meet The Beatles

Well...those are all 60's albums.
I should come up with lists for other decades.
