Monkey Man - Amazing guitar work from Keith!

Paint It Black - Brian does great on this. The off beat acoustic chords during verses, then the move to playing on the beat for the chorus. The thrashing bolero like rhythm at the end is also ace. The off beat chords were especially ace when they played it live.

I need to listen to the other two more. grinning smiley

Monkey Man must feature some of Keith's best open G-playing, without open G winking smiley

At the time of its recording and release, probably the biggest, fattest, raunchiest rhythm guitar sound on a rock record--before You Really Got Me, that is.

Since the list of the songs mentioned will be enormous here, I pick up one no one had done yet - probably because it is so obvious. But if we really talking about rhythm guitar, there is one gem, which defined Keith Richards to the real master in that field, with an unique, idiosyncratic touch, and I guess could be also the one Keith himself might pick up as well - the original, magical "Street Fighting Man". Could anyone before him even thought that one can make such a badass rocking groovie dangerous stuff out of acoustic guitar? A total killer.

Child Of The Moon also deserves a mention here, imo.

Many of Keith's most inventive riffs and rhythm guitar patterns were created before the more locked down lead/rhythm roles were implemented in the band:

Satisfaction
Citadel
2000 Light Years From Home
Child Of The Moon
Jumping Jack Flash
Street Fighting Man
Factory Girl
Honky Tonk Women
Gimmie Shelter
Monkey Man
You Can't Always Get What You Want

CYHMK should also get a lot of votes here, imo. In many ways, not a typical Keith rhythm guitar - but as cool as it gets.

Always loved Stray Cat Blues. There is just to many in the Stones catalogue to mention. Brian on The Last Time as well. His repetitive riff turned the corner for the Stones.

Mick Jagger is underrated as a rhythm guitar player

Fingerprint File.. Stop Breakin Down..

with Keith as one of the best rhythm guitarists ever, there hasn't been much room for Jagger to shine.. still he has a knack for it.

Yes, in fact, agree. The leading riff of Fingerprint File is Jagger's. The rhythm-track of this song shines especially on the 75 tour.

He plays similar to how he riffs in open G, but it is in standard tuning.

I nominate Monkey Man as the nastiest, baddest all around fonky Stones song.

Honkey Tonk Women.
what you leave out is as important as what you put in.
there is some golden silence on the rhythm track for this song.

When it comes to rhythm guitar playin there's obviously so much great stuff from the Stones.

But I always found it a highlight when they play(ed) Chuck Berry tunes.
Let it rock, Carol, Roll over Beethoven, Little Queenie, Around and Around, Sweet little 16 . .- I just love them do Berry stuff. To me there's nobody doing that better . .

Boogie! The Stones are the masters of it. IMO, one of the reasons for that is that they never play it straight throughout the 12 bars, like for instance Status Quo do here:

Somebody mentioned "I Think I'm Going Mad" and I'll second that.

I think "Summer Romance" has some of the most exciting riffing/weaving ever...

That's funny, DP!
When posting about Stones/Berry I had thought of S. Quo as well, who had done some well received covers.
