You're on a roll today!

Mick on first 'rolling' rhythm. Keith on second one, (meaner). Keith on lead throughout. BUT Ronnie on the overdubbed, and dare I say brilliant?, (I dare), brilliant lead frill in the middle and at the end.

Another one to play during lunch-break, thanks.

ps cf album's liner notes.

Black and Blue has the mixing board sheet inside showing who played what. I haven't got it in front of me, but it's in there.

Why would you be afraid to say that Wood played a decent solo?....

Hello,

I'm sure that those liner notes state that Ronnie doesn't play any guitar on Crazy Mama. This is backed up on the Time Is On Our Side website (which is excellent, by the way).He plays something else (though it's not completely clear what, given the way the liner notes are set out).

I also reckon that, despite the Keith sound, it is Mick playing the second guitar which comes in, in the style of Keith. The first guitar has more of the feel of a guitarist; the second is quite rudimentary.

Great tune on a poor album

Declan

Ablett, I can't see where anyone said they were afraid to say that Woody played a good solo unless you are refering to Deidreddy's comment "BUT Ronnie on the overdubbed, and dare I say brilliant?, (I dare), brilliant lead frill in the middle and at the end." Quite a different meaning me lad!

I think the opening 'rolling' rhythm guit. is Mick because it's a fairly loose, open style........as on Winter, as on Sway....... I also hear the second the second, counter-pointing rhythm as Keith, cos it's sharper, harsher and meaner.
The lead riff is obviously Keith.

the 'other' guitar: it's Ron. The one doing the the jittery ascending then descending pattern in the middle and at the end. Firstly, without looking at the notes, just listen to the style. The first time I heard it (1976) I knew it was Ron. Similar style/tone to his pattern in "You can Make Me Dance, You Can Make Me Sing, You can Make Me Do Just Any Old Thing"! (Last Faces Single (1974).

Then (1976) I looked at the liner (mixing) notes and it says "O/D Solo and ending" - so the guitar was an overdub and Ron needn't have been in the studio for the main session (s). (Similarly Keith's bass is an overdub. An earlier take has Bill).

but three names are mentioned below the "O/D" reference: these are Billy, Keith and Ron. Well, Billy plays the Piano. And,( I think it's Mick's writing btw), Mick forgot to put Billy's name in the correct channel marked "Piano". He put Bliiy, Keith and Ronnie in the Back-Up vocal channel. He made (another) simple mistake in the "O/D" guitar channel. We'll assume that that guitar is not played by two guitarists. Therefore - on sonic evidence alone it's RON. (Far too imaginative and dextrously complicated for Keith anyway).

Besides, i remember a 1976 review saying that Ron played on three album tracks- possibly in conversation with Ron or mick - not sure. (The other two are HeyNeg. and CherryOh).

Deidre is 100% right: that IS Ronnie playing on "Crazy Mama!"

I don't care what the credits read--his personality is all over those licks!

And it's probably the best thing about that song, too. It seemed to me at the time that Mick and Keith threw that one on the album to pander to the hard rock segment of their audience that might have been disaffected by the various R&B/black music idioms offered on that record. "Crazy Mama" seems more like a Humble Pie version of the Stones than the Stones.

Never been mad on Crazy Mama - it's o.k at best. I was sure Ronnie played on the track although i haven't got confirmation close at hand. It's possibly my least favourite song on the Black And Blue album.

Regardless of who plays what, it's definitely one of the best tracks on the album, next to Hand Of Fate and Hot Stuff.

Somewhat spoiled by the bass imo.
