Regardless of what the headline reads, Townshend said "it will be the last big one for us". He still hasn't said they will quit performing as The Who.

The usual crap then. I'm not even gonna click on the link when I know it's mostly speculation.

The last big one was in 1989.

Well, there's not a mention of this at thewho.com. Until I hear Pete say "quit touring" then I'll just take it to mean what he said: "the last big one".

The last "big one" for The Stones was 2005-2007, but they still perform.

I can't take seriously an article that uses "a source close to the band said" as its reference point.

The best source to check on will be the band's own website: [thewho.com]

Here is what Pete Townshend actually said:

Uncut: It’s The Who's 50th anniversary next year. Do you have any plans to commemorate it?
Pete: We will probably just tour and it’ll probably be the last big tour that we do.

So we "probably" should just take the London Evening Stranded with a punch of salt--other media outlets have subsequently been quoting the Evening Stranded as their "source".

In the link below are also the full details of the premiere of the Tommy documentary where Townshend made this statement. Sensation – The Story Of The Who’s Tommy will be broadcast on October 25 and 26 on BBC4 and on November 9 on BBC America.

They are trying to boost ticket sales. I heard Mick Taylor and Ron Wood will be guesting on a few classics

It's also news to Roger that they're "quitting" in this October 22 interview with PlanetRockRadio from the premiere of Sensation....

Paul Anthony (Planet Rock): "Earlier this year you did the big tour, Quadrophenia and More. What everybody's asking is, will The Who go out and tour again, because there is bit of an anniversary coming up soon, too."

Roger Daltrey: "....Well, I'd hate to think it's all over, but if it is, it's been a great run....I think we're playing, Pete and I playing together, we're kind of joined at the hip, and playing better than ever, so there's no reason to stop really, and the music hasn't dated, so why not? But equally, you can't be on the road all the time, you have to have time off."

If they quit touring that means they'll entirely focus on recording albums, right? Oh wait...

Far as I am concerned when a band pulls out and plays the "farewell tour" card, and I go pay up to go see them... then that is it... they are done for me... forever... I saw the Who's farewell tour long long ago, and said goodbye to them... byebye... and that was that... same with the Eagles and a couple of otehr bands.

The moral? Dont play that "Good bye" card... just do your thing... and keep rolling.

STONES!!

I saw Status Quo on their farewell "end of the road" tour in 85 I think. And then saw the original band play a storming show in Glasgow recently. it's never over till the fat lady sings

I though the whos big farewell was 1989, heck, how many have they had?

Well, they had a pretty big one in 1978, then another huge one in 2002. It'll probably take two more farewells to finally kill the name, even then it will probably continue on.

Roger is surprisingly clueless regarding the Who's steadily declining popularity.

I agree - However, they have a pretty staunch fan base that might have crossed generations. I'm not sure because I can't remember the last time they toured.

But when it comes to playing drums for The Who, neither of them hold a candle to Zak Starkey! Zak's heavily influenced by Moon (who gave him his first drum kit when he was a kid), but has his own thing going on.

Track down some of the recordings of The Who in the summer of 2000, their last full year of touring with John Entwistle. The band is down to Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle, Zak, and Rabbit, and it's pretty explosive. That's the closest they've sounded to the glory days of The Who with Keith Moon.

Last time I saw them was the "Endless Wire" tour. Pete was really great. Roger not so much. It was cool though because I was able to take my goddaughter (I helped raise her) & continue her musical education. She loved it & came away with a new appreciation of WGFA. She's 21 now & has pretty good musical taste. Really wanted to see the Stones & I was prepared to take her but sadly the Seattle show got axed. Hope I get the opportunity later.

With only two original members for how many years now they should have packed it in years ago. Saw them with all four true Who members way back in the 70's. After Moon died though it was hardly the Who anymore, and it was as if David Bowie had replaced Mick Jagger in the Stones? Just not the same band anymore, regardless of the talent.
