I agree and will go a bit further "before grunge" and AFTER the punk movement of the mid to late 70s that also made "raw" in....will it go round in circles?? ;-)Quote

Yes Steel Wheels is too slick. But keep in mind that in the 1980's slickness was an unquestioned virtue. This was before grunge made raw, "organic" sounds fashionable again.

Always better before mastering. If you get the 2cd reissue of Atlantic crossing from rod stewart, the sound is raw on the 2nd cd like you were in the room with them.

As im not in a place I can listen to these cuts, are we discussing tracks from the Steel Wheels Monitor mixes or are these new?

It's remarkable that we're able to hear better instrument separation, more energy and a wider soundscape in general from a rough mix! Terrifying is absolutely brilliant.
Would be interesting to hear from pros like Drake on this one. What went wrong in the final mix?

I bet Blinded By Love sound better in an even earlier stage.....before the song was ever written!

neither. The Monitor Mixes circulated August 2006. These came out a few months later. For the most part, the Training Wheels songs appear to be earlier takes.

Wow! Fantastic energy on Mixed Emotions. Much more so than on the rather tame released version. The rhythm guitars of keith and Mick sound great together. The whole band is on fire.

Always liked Blinded By Love, not sure why the general disdain for it. A great country toon.
Love how the melody was strongly in place before hardly any of the lyrics, maybe just the chorus.
I think this is the track that Chris Jagger was credited for co-writing the lyrics on, or research or something.

Yes it was. I also like this early version here, and compared to the finished version, I think they somehow lost its potentia during the finishing process. Probably something to do with adding the full worked lyrics, which made Jagger's delivery to sound so forced. He was carefully trying to follow the 'story' and the melody line, which ends up sounding like a struggle to him. There is a nice melody there, and the whole structure of the song is catchy, but the finished version just don't work.

<The reasons why STEEL WHEELS is not very memorable album lie deeper, and those early versions show why.>
What do they show? To me, the songs sound really good. Later on, a ton of reverb and synths were added, the songs were chopped off and edited as well.
If the Stones did anything wrong later in the process it must have something to do with Mick's vocals on some of the songs. Less mannered vocals, and a bit looser feel could have saved some of the stuff, imo.
I like Blinded By Love, too. I love Hearts For Sale, and I find Terrifying, Almost Hear You Sigh, Continental Drift and Terrifying latter day Stones classics.
Hold On To Your Hat is the clunker on the album, imo. I wish that they hadn't tampered with the guitars on that one and Can't Be Seen. Reverb and delay-fest with Keith's guitars. Totally unnecessary!

That might be true to a certain extent, but for instance "Break The Spell" is a very dark song, which indeed conveys a sense of "danger" (also thanks to the wonderful harmonica work by Jagger). Despite the production, also "Continental Drift" has a certain edge, and songs like "Mixed Emotions", "Terryfing" or "Hearts For Sale" had a lot of unexpressed potential.
Steel Wheels was a very effective comeback indeed!
