Mick Jagger - best rockstar name ever?

Michael Philip Jagger...

MICK JAGGER

It's just so punchy and sharp.

I mean, the name "Jagger" alone sounds cool...like "Dagger"...sharp, dangerous.

Couple that with "Mick"...it's just a brilliant name. How could Mick have become anything other than a rockstar?

I guess Sir Michael doesn't have the same ring to it? On the other hand, Sir Michael is not the first nobility in show business. Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Prince all surpasses him in rank...

interesting that no-one brought this up before, or rarely. It`s a great name, sounds fast, dangerous and dirty. In geneolic (?) history, I think the word jagger is connected to roving, wandering around.
Perhaps it sounds more fascinating to someone who`s not british.
It`s really just great if you think of it. I mean, Robert Plant. What`s that?

Stanley Booth called it "a name you could open sardine tins with" :E

When I was a child my guardians felt sure he'd called himself that on purpose to be borderline vulgar, like a stripper's name -
Mick Jagger, I mean, not Stanley Booth! :E

An excellent name indeed

I'm American, so I've never met anyone named "Jagger".

Is it a common last name in Britain?

Robert Plant is indeed a dull name, ha.

There are some great nicknames...Iggy Pop, Lemmy, Bono, Sting, Ringo Starr...

Even John Lennon is a pretty great name, but it just doesn't have the punch of Mick Jagger.

borderline vulgar, I`ll keep that for a song. Maybe his conservative and clean-living attitude is a psychological rejection of a wild-sounding name he`s living under. Serves him right to suffer...

Jagger is a british name, but it`s not common. Refers to gypsies in the middle ages, definitely in England. Before or after the Boston Tea Party, I couldn`t find out.

Seriously, what are you talking about? Even now, in the his 70s his life can not be called conservative. Oh, all these stupid myths of Stonesland - only exorbitant consumption of drugs and alcohol to the point of stupor and forgetting one's own name are considered wild. You know there are a lot of different stuff in life exept to be a washed-up junkie
And yes - a cool name. Once upon a time when Richards could say something nice about Mick he said that Jagger is the most appropriate name for a rock' n'roller and that hated his own ordinary name. Richards - a mechanic or carpenter (paraphrasing from memory, can not remember exactly what profession he named)

Very funny! Actually, Charles Manson was a musician. One theory has it that he was out to kill Terry Melcher (record producer) who used to live in the house that Sharon Tate was living in at the time of those horrific murders. It appears as though Terry refused to record Manson's music and Manson was out for revenge.

Speaking of Marilyn Manson, the name Alice Cooper first belonged to an actress, the mother of U.S. actor Gary Cooper.

Alice Cooper (Vincent Furnier) admitted that the band as it once existed was influenced early on by vintage films, but according to "legend" the name arose from a ouija board session.

But he chose it to get attention. In the case of the singer for the Rolling Stones, his stage name is what everyone actually called him all his life.

I suppose everyone on this board knows this, but when he was young he wanted to be called "Mike", and didn't like being called "Mick", so of course everyone called him "Mick". I suppose he's gotten used to it by now.

Yeah I remember reading Helter Skelter when it came out in the 70's. Strange times in LA in the late 60's. Manson co-wrote (with Dennis Wilson) the Beach Boys song "Never Learn Not to Love" on the 20/20 album. Original name was "Cease to Exist". I once heard about a minute of Manson singing the original somewhere.

Well, originally somebody whose last name was Richard, Richards, or Richardson was just the son of somebody called Richard, it doesn't have any reference to a profession.

I think the thing about Jagger is just that because it was such an uncommon name it was instantly memorable. Though there is the actor Dean Jagger.

Yeah, there's a lot of good made-up names (Stark Naked and the Car Thieves, for instance), but Jagger is one of the best real names.
