can we talk wine? no Stones activity..might as well talk juice...

here are three reds I enjoyed recently, 2 of them under $10..

from Languedoc ..delicious..great value..
... for a major California producer this Syrah is delicious.. about 12 bucks.. J. Lohr Syrah

this last one is my favorite..from Carinena, made by a big co-op..50% syrah, 50% garnacha..very good blend of two delicious varietals ..also under ten bucks

quit your wining.

Actually, good topic. I'm from Canada, so I don't actually no of ANY good wines under 10 bucks because of the high taxes.

I end up drinking Australian and Argentinian and some Chileans, mostly Cabs or cab blends and under 15 bucks.

ah Treaclefingers you're onto a good thing with the South American wines..

never had one I didn't like, much better than the usual supermarket California ones...

love the Carmenere from Chile!

got one I'm looking forward to opening when the weather gets cooler..still pretty hot here in NC..

It's been hot in Vancouver this summer too. While I'll sometimes knuckle under and buy white wine, I normally just chill the red.

I know it's sacrilegious but I do it when no one is looking.

OK, I'm in. Duke, did you do any food pairings with these wines and if so how did they pair up? There are wineries a-plenty here in Northern California. A recent favorite is Cooper-Garrod's Viognier which paired well with a nouilles aux Fruits de mer I whipped up on evening...

Chris-

I had the Spanish blend with ground beef tacos, no sour cream, lots of diced peppers, onions, some cheese. mmmmm good quick meal with that wine slightly chilled ..oh yes

I had the J Lohr Syrah with bbq'ed spare ribs. now that was really good.

the Paradou was with grilled pork chops, with just a little salt and pepper on them,

and a salad.

your Viognier is one I've not seen but with a seafood dish no doubt it was nice...

That's my favorite one. It's cold here these days, so it's good to have a bottle in hand, just in case.

Treacle and Duke, you're not the only ones I've heard of that like chillled red wine. I have held off on trying it because my dear departed Italian Dad would turn over in his grave if I were to commit such an atrocity.

But, it does sound appealing on a hot day.

hi latebloomer-

bet your Dad knew a thing or two about wine and food..

the ones that chill best are the lighter ones like Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, lighter Chianti, etc..

just my opinion...I wouldn't chill a big red like a fruit bomb cab, or a zinfandel..at least not much

my father in law puts a couple of ice cubes in his red wine..loves it. as long as one enjoys one's wine! cheers

For something fresh, nothing beats the portuguese Vinho Verde. White and a bit gaseous. Also the world famous Mateus Rosé is a fine choice for the summer days.

Red wines, we have some of the best in the world. In of price, in the 5-10€ can find splendid wines in the supermarket here.

Yeah Duke, I can imagine that a Chianti would taste nice chilled. I pretty much stick to chilled whites and blush in the summer months and go with reds when the weather is cooler.

Labor Day heralds the end of the summer and it's coming up this weekend, so maybe I'll drink a toast of chilled red wine to the hard working people.

Cheers to you, too. smileys with beer

I wish the supermarkets here had more Portuguese reds! great value..

a bit like southern Rhone reds.

I always look for Portuguese reds...sometimes find them in wine shops. I want to go there, Portugal.

Good topic guys.
If your into red wine, I can recommend you an Argentinian Malbec called Aguaribay.
It's about 10 Euros in Germany. I don't know what you have to pay for it on the other side of the pond.

Then I love an Australian one called Yellow Tail. It's about 8 Euros.

If you wanna talk white wine, I would advise you to taste some of the German Riesling and Grauburgunder made at the river Mosel. They might not be as cheap, but worth every Dollar.

As I am in New York for the next two months, I would love to know about white wine in the states you would advise to drink.

Duke, thanks for those initial three tips. Will try.
Trader Joe has a good Sancerre (white) for $12.99 at the moment.
Like some of the Chilean whites.

Must admit my favorite is a good French Champagne or some of the Napa Valley Champagne. One glass is a real treat.

Re Mateus Rose, that was the first wine a lot of my music friends and I used to drink. Feeling quite grown-up!
