It was still the era of Michael Jackson?

Yes, to a degree. I just checked the 1986 Billboard year end singles and there are plenty of rockers there.

To my ears this song had it all. Seemed to fit the era of stadium rockers just fine. Definitely sounds better than US charts of 28. I thknk even lower in the UK.

As any stones song the older the better.

It was only one hit, not a giant hit.

Good song, but just not that radio friendly I think

It starts out very strong, but then runs out of gas.

I can't believe I'm saying this about the Stones but the pedestrian drumming lets it down. Is that Charlie?

The 80s were a terrible decade. It was the time of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and a whole lot of other terrible nonsense bands. Even the Stones fell victim to the 80s sound on Dirty Work. One Hit is a great song but it would have sounded a lot better with a different production (especially the drums and bass).

Agree ... decent, not great by any means.

Exactly! Also, no tour to support the album/singles!

The backup singing is a bit cringeworthy, and overall too many bells and whistles.
A heavily stripped down version might have been better...

Great guitar work but nothing else, sadly. Awful drums and vocals. No real lyrical hook or memorable lines apart from "I don't need No Security" which, by 1998, was generally accepted as fact.

Funny topic because obviously to each his own. I think it is a very weak track.

Personally, this is among my favourite Stones tracks. I always thought it to be criminally underated, in being one of their few singles that has never (or rarely, at best) been included within a Stones "greatest hits" package.

If it was the first single I think it would have done really well. I think Saint of Me would have been big too if was the first single

because it was the second single off a not very successful album by a band in their 40's who weren't touring behind it and who have never had a history of having one more than one big hit off any album they've ever released.

It was only one hit, not a giant hit.

That's another technical explanation, it had the word hit in the title and people felt that was a sort of ruse

I really don't think so. Agree w/ Rocky: "No real lyrical hook", not a catchy one that's for sure. 2.5 stars out of 5, average!

Same here. Fantastic song off my favorite Rolling Stones album.

One problem was when they DID attempt to perform it LIVE, it wasn't done very well...and yes, the album was also not so great. I personally like the song a lot. It's very different from much of their catalog.

It's a great intro and chord progression...which probably deserved a better song building around it.

Last memorable song/single they did imo.
M.E.? Forgotten.
Love Is Strong? Forgotten.

Flip The Switch retains a certain edge though.

I used to really dislike Dirty Work for the horrible production, but what's even worst is the barking singing of Jagger. I literally can't listen to it longer than 30 seconds. The only tracks that are decent are Harlem Shuffle and Had it With You.

I still really like Bridges as a whole, and I like about half of BB. And I really like the Deluxe versions of Exile, GHS, SG and TY.

I've loved it ever since I first heard it, and I still stand behind my statement of it making a fabulous show opener!!! Wish they'd give it a go!!

Iirc and imo Jagger caught that "disease" when he sang State Of Shock with M. Jackson. But I think it works pretty well for a direct-hit unidirectional track like One Hit.
And Page stuttering in the key of B >grinning smiley< adds some good bits too.
