(1) Both of them are institutions that won't refuse to die no matter how long is it from their glory days.
(2) Both are founded on values that nobody believes anymore.
(3) Money.
(4) Non-catholics view the pope as non-Rolling Stones fans the Stones: what a hec is that doing in this Millenium.

regarding (4) - in fact from what I've seen there are some Catholics who seem to feel the same way about the Pope in the 21st century - and some stones fans who wonder the same things about the band too!

Sour grapes - but the thread I posted, (since deleated - thanks bv) had, at least, some humour.
But at least one thing I am left wondering, since the stupid pope (sorry catholics), can choose his own name and the last pope chose JOHN PAUL, then why did this guy not choose GEORGE RINGO to be his name - it should have been an obvious choice........
