OT: Rockers over 70
Posted by: stonehearted ()
Date: July 27, 2013 00:40

Today another rocker has joined the 70 club. The writer Peter Bannams has complied a list of rockers over 70....

"Guess who’s rockin’ Over 70?

Remember the Rolling Stones’ first “last tour”? Maybe you weren’t born yet.
These days old rockers don’t die and they don’t fade away. They just keep coming back better.

Paul McCartney was under 30 when 'When I’m 64' was released. Hard to fathom that the Beatle reached his 70th birthday, in mid-2012. (Conspiracy theories and VW License plates be damned.) Age hasn’t stopped Sir Paul from rocking out on a 2013 tour, and stopping by Saturday Night Live."

"Ringo Starr was also under 30 when 'When I’m 64' was released. It’s hard to believe the Beatles’ Drummer is now 72. (73 in July.)
Starr was just shy of 70 when he released his last solo album in 2010."

"Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will have to stay content, for now, with the fact that they’re rocking well into their late late 60s. But Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has passed his 70th birthday, June 2, 2011."

[Just added to the list is the guy on the right.]

"Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed hit 70 a year ago, and is still active.

The singer and guitarist has released over 30 live and studio albums as a solo artist, between the late 1960s and today."

"The folk songster has been an influence in music for fifty years, starting with his civil rights and anti-war songs in the tumultuous late 60s.

Bob Dylan is also in the 71 club."

"Canadian folk-rock legend Gordon Lightfoot is also past 70. Almost 75. He continues to tour, telling a sold-out 2012 Ottawa audience that he still plays 60 gigs a year."

"Guess who else is rocking into his 70s? Randy Bachman of The Guess Who, and Bachman Turner Overdrive. Bachman had to have a rotator cuff operation, which he blames on decades of shouldering heavy guitars. But he’s still taking care of business.

Bachman will turn 70 in September, 2013."

The list seems a bit incomplete. Seeing the Lou Reed pic reminded me of another, born in 1942....

John Cale performing at the Urban SimpleLife Festival in 2010.

Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood, released in October 2012, is Cale's first album release as a septuagenarian.

Any others of note that anyone can think of? Surely there has to be a top 20 list in this....

Paul McCartney was under 30 when 'When I’m 64' was released.

All of the Beatles were under 30 when the band folded (Paul 27). How's that for divine inspiration? He was still only 24!!! when When I'm 64 and Sgt. Pepper were released.

McCartney actually wrote When Im 64 when he was about 16.

he wrote it in his childhood home in Forthlin Road, Liverpool.

I was in his home last year and I seem to recall some artefacts showing some of the original lyrics (although my memory may be playing tricks with me on that bit) but the song was definitely written there when he was in his mid-teens

Buddy Guy sang his song the other night about being 74 years young and drinking wine with kings and the Rolling Stones, then mentioned that he'd written it two years ago, making him now 76 years young.

He was dynamite, btw.

Yes - - he wrote it as a sort of tribute to his father who was in a jazz/music hall type of band in the 1920s I believe.

It was incomplete but always around as a song until he decided to record it in late 66' (part of the November 1966 recording sessions at Abbey Road for 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and I think also 'Penny Lane').

Not to derail things, but it's weird how that 2nd generation that showed up after the Beatles/Stones/Dylan etc are getting old now

Steven Tyler is 65
Tom Petty is 62
Peter Frampton is 63
Ozzy is 64

heck even Kurt Cobain would've been 46

Hi chop! Feel free, rockers well on their way to 70 are worth mentioning as well.

And in just 3 years, Johnny Rotten (Lydon) will become a sixtysomething as well. Talk about where does the time go!....

OT: The 60's Generation Are Turning 70
Posted by: Big Al ()

In the 70’s, journalists were asking the question: are the Rolling Stones too old to be performing rock n’ roll? We’re past this now, thankfully. Performing into your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and even your 60’s, is now the norm. But, in my opinion, there is something a little different about the number 70. I know people will point to the likes of Chuck Berry, Willie Nelson and the old bluesmen, but we’re talking about the 60’s generation, here. This is new territory. Townshend is going deaf, Keith’s looking increasingly frail, Clapton's talked about retirement from touring and the lifestyle of the immortal Lemmy is finally catching up with him. One has to wonder: how much longer? The next 10 years will be particularly interesting for the greatest musical generation.

That generation of musicians is dwindling with each passing year. Scary amount of deaths this past few years.

All to be expected of course. The day Mick and/or Keith and/or Charlie go will be a VERY sad day! sad smiley

Their music lives on regardless, even in the hearts of some 15 year olds. grinning smiley

We're losing many of the great actors and other artists from that generation now as well. I remember being inexplicably sad when Paul Newman died several years ago. It felt like I was losing a part of my younger self. I think it's like that for all of the baby boomers right now, motality is creeping up on us all.
