The Hives! Great performence at both Stadion and The Globe, and with the new album "Tyrannosuarus Hives", they will rock the crowd before the Stones enters stage!

Bob Dylan..."Like A Rolling Stone"...not that he needs an opening slot for the Stones, he'd probably refuse anyway, but it would be the show of a lifetime if itever happened.
Modern new bands or cult established artists not The Pretenders, Bryan Adams or Crowes. If the Stones want to bring a young audience in AND show they can be as good as twenty somethings.
How long would it be before Mick Taylor was mentioned....superb. Talk about rubbing salt into the wound! And the Faces...aint half of em dead? How about ACDC for some dates? I'd like to see some new up and coming bands given a crack. Aint Tina Turner retired now anyway?
Ocean Colour Scene (great in Stuttgart anmd great anyway) Franz Ferdinand (if they arent too big) AC/DC again Phillip Boa (for the five German Club dates during the next tour) Garbage

just one of them out of five! similar kind of ratio to the original Stones line up!
Can not believe you mentioned Lucinda. That is who I was just going to post. Just as long as Jagger doesn't decide to draft her for one of those embarrassing guest shots on HTW a' la Sheryl Crow. I also think the Stones could actually really put a special killer show together if they pick an extra cool opening act. In '69 with Ika and Tina it seemed like that made for a whole event. Nowadays the opneing slot for the Stones looks good on paper for the band. "Opening for the Rolling Stones!" Doesn't get any better, right? But in reality the crowd that is here for the Stones wnats no one except the Stones. It is a pretty unthankful gig. Saw many good bands get booed unmercifully. Witness Prince's debacle. Then the Stones are also infamous for sticking the opneres with a shitty soundsystem. In 89 I watched Living Color open for them. I was appalled at first. The Bass and Kick were MUD. Vox were distorted and inaudible. It was a mess. Vernon Reid who used every effect in the book anyway was just a wash of volume. So I thought the Stones were going to sound dreadful for their big comeback. When they come out the sound was crystal clear. Charlie's kick was perfect, as was every mike on that stage. Someone who likes the Stones himself and knows that they are there to not outpunk them but to build it up. Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Wallflowers, Kings of Leon, Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Bands like Strokes, Green Day, Stripes, Wilco, and the Crowes are all too hot themsleves. They might have too much at stake themsleves.
Lucinda was happy enough to open for Neil Young on his 'Greendale' tour in the US two years ago. She'd be a good opener for the Stones, and a nice blend of country, blues and rock n roll. She'd be up to the challenge, I think and it would bring her to the attention of a lot of people as well who maybe arent familiar with her.
I agree with you about it being a thankless task, however.
I saw the Black Crows open for the Stones at Wembley in '95 and they absolutely bottled it. They were terrible. One of the 3 nights it started raining and the crowd were even less interested than on the other two and they basically gave up and quit early. It got them their biggest cheer of the week
