Quite a few bands have recorded this song throughout the years. Nazareth's version is probably the most famous. I know Heart sang this, too. Who else has recorded it?

The recently deceased Jim Capaldi had a UK hit with an uptempo version of it in the late 70's

Little Milton also did a gospel/soul-style duet with Lucinda Williams on it some years ago.

As felice & Boudleaux Bryant co-wrote many of the Everly brothers greatest songs, I'd imagine that the Everlys 1961 version could be the 'original'

Its also been covered by Emmylou Harris (aside from her duet with Gram),Roy Orbison, Joan Jett, Cher, Pat Boone (!), Don McLean, Sinead O'Connor, jennifer Warnes, Jimmy Webb and Paul Young, amongst many others.
