Tix Prices: Spielberg, Lucas foretell $150 movie tickets, death of studios

Movies lost a bit of their magic when two Hollywood titans predicted that the film industry will soon collapse under its own greed and shortsightedness. Appearing on a University of Southern California panel, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas said they expected studios to bet the farm on fewer, bigger-budgeted films each year rather than a handful of tinier, quirkier titles. But the gamble, they said, will cause an industry "meltdown" when just a few bomb at the box office. After that happens, Lucas believes movie theaters will become more like lavish Broadway theaters with tickets costing as much as $150. Fortunately, they both think independent films will flourish with video-on-demand releases.

Same as to good ol' rock 'n roll? Are we not already seeing it? Except of course, the obsessive compulsives,..

George Lucas talks out his ass.

Gary Kurtz was the guy who made the good Star Wars films anyway.

All George saw was toy$$$$.

There are already movie tickets which cost €18 - they are filmed operas and ballets. I went to one and wanted my money back since it was basically a video shown at a cinema. IMAX and 3-D tickets also cost more than ordinary ones, and I think they are worth it.

I can count the number of movies I've seen in the last 30 years on one hand. So don't count on me to spend $150 to watch one.

Oh well another one of Americas industries on its way out.

Cinema is only for teenagers these days. Stupid films, comparable with cartoons for kids. Shut it down, I don't mind. They make better cinema on TV now. Even for adults.

I don't think so. It's either models or computer animations...

Today's cinema is all about spectacle.

It's gotta zing.. bling.. shine... explode... or be stupid "funny".

You will never see a movie like "All the Presidents Men" or "Serpico" in the cinemas anymore.

I saw the latest Star Trek film last week... how disappointing... all style (and explosions) and no meat.

I prefer anything Polanski and Woody Allen did to the spectacles Spielberg and Lucas have done.

Wow! Some curmudgeons here! There are amazing films being made still. I am a huge film buff, and there continues to be fantastic films made. Both for cinema and for direct DVD release. Movie ticket prices are too expensive, so go to the matinée on the weekdays and get a good deal. Lucas hasn't made a great film....well... can't remember when...which is a good thing he has sold the Star Wars franchise and JJ Abrams will breath some vital life back into it, what he did to Star Trek was amazing. Revitalized a great sci fi series.

Sorry it wasn't amazing.. yeah sure the bling CGI was amazing, but that's not what Star Trek was about.

Also.. if I ever see another film with a CGI fight involving people leaping from flying car to flying car (and it's variants with trains, waterwheels etc..) I will scream.

This film was empty.

Oh dear Gravity ....might just have to read the final chapter to see
the explanation of how those guys stay on the roof of a out of control
loco as it falls thru a burning bridge for like ten minutes....they just don't make boots that grip like that anymore

I'd rather watch the last 15 minutes of Hitchcock's 'Strangers On A Train' if I want an edge-of-my-seat rush!!

I saw the trailer for The new Lone Ranger film... oh joy... lots of fights on train roofs and jumping across trains and burning bridges...

I can't wait.

CGI is a real film saver, thank the maker.

I do wonder why I have to keep rewatching Attack of the Clones every time I go the cinema.

Well I guess that is your opinion, I for one thought the film was fantastic. Great story and very inventive special effects. Star Trek the films really lost their appeal after Voyage Home. The Next Generation films for the most part didn't really have much soul to them other than First Contact, which was very enjoyable.

Some great films though the last few years...
Drive
A Place Beyond the Pines
The Impossible (highly underrated. I was in the Tsunami in Sri Lanka, and this film was very powerful)
Cloud Atlas (one of the most unique films I have seen in a long time. Great story, and fantastic effects)
Dark Knight Rising
Zero Dark Thirty (fantastic!)
The Master (very well acted, however, glacially slow story)
Lincoln
Amour
Coriolanus (fantastic interpretation of Shakespeare)
Haywire,
and Moonrise Kingdom, is a good start of a long list of fantastic films. I guess I just really enjoy movies, and love the hobby. It would be interesting to see other's lists of some of their favorite films in the last few years.

It's not just my opinion.

It had bling.. and blang... and sparkly stuff and an Enterprise interior that looked like a food processing plant... and people making mid air leaps and fighting on top of crashing things.. and all kinds of christmassy stuff.

But "Great story"? Want to discuss plot holes and silly stuff?

But what can you expect from the guys who made Lost?

This film did have less plot holes than the first one though which was an insult to intelligence.

I'm dreading what they are going to do to Star Wars.. I'm betting they make Return of the Sith look like a classic.
