so its good news the stones are back working on there album so we sit and wait with baited breath i would like to see one keef song on the album i think thats a nice balance i fear if he sings on more than that its gonna affect the album ive noticed he sang on three on btb that two to many i dont want to turn this into a mick better tha keef thing because i love the pair of them..the reason im a fan is because of keefs sound in the early days..he just had that sound and i was hooked we just need a nice tight album..
right on cafaro, why can't he do songs like struggle, 999 or even how i wish.. i think a tour with , taylor one night and then beck another, would be exciting and would make ronnie and keith work a little harder. who knows they say the new album is much more guitars...more leads, etc.. but no more keith slow ballads..he done so many in the past 8 years that he forgot how to play fast!
If this disc is a mix of Wandering Spirit and Keith's 2 solo discs, it will be phenominal. Unfortunatley I fear we are going to get a bunch of Don't Stops
It would be a refreshing change to give Mick the final vocal on the upcoming album. I think it's time to retire the formula that gave Keith the final vocal on many post-70s Stones efforts (All About You, Sleep Tonight, Slipping Away, Thru and Thru, Thief in the Night/How Can I Stop and Losing My Touch). Having said that, a song with a mixed vocal (like Salt of the Earth and Memory Motel) would be awesome.

I would. the stones will be fortunate to fill 40 decent minutes - there's no way they have enough solid material to fill two discs - they haven't done that in the course of the last two decades collectively.

the Stones were great long before ass-kicking lead guitar became the rage. And I, for one, wouldn't mind if they didn't even have any "leads" on their songs. Good rock'n'roll doesn't need it - take JJF, SFM, BS to name three that don't even have a guitar break....
Since the reunion that was Steel Wheels, Keith sings 2 or 3 songs, so maybe there is a peace treaty guaranteeing that. How many Keith songs are there on Forty Licks? I agree with those of you who say no Keith ballads please this time around. Another reggae tune, a rocker and a slow blues with Mick wailing on harmonica would be nice Keith songs, though.
I feel that Keith is writing songs based on where he is now. I doubt we will get any real rockers out of him at this point. I cannot imagine him penning a song like "Little T & A" at his age, I think it would come of silly.
It would seem that he is comfortable with his age and is focusing more on soul sounding songs that play to his vocal range (He has been playing Happy in a different key for a while now) or country inspired songs. "Losing My Touch" could have easily been a Tom Waits song, but incredibly, Keith sings better than Tom and the production was better. I would not be surprised to see him sing from the piano on this tour after ditching his axe during "Slipping Away".
I could see him doing a mid-tempo rocker but I think he keeps the balls out songs for Mick.
They haven't yet released a studio version of "Nearness of You"...
Good that comment that the Stones are too much stucked into that formula of Richards ballad final .. perhaps that is some kind of compromise solution how to share the cake. It was great and dramatic way to stop with "All About You" and still quite nice with "Sleep Tonight", although even then the idea started to sound a bit too repetatitive or calculative. Brideges album's grand finale with TWO Keith ballads was a mark of total artistic dementia - and total lack of interest of doing a coherent album.
I am also for the idea that a nice, tight collection of good quality, top trimmed 10 to 12 songs included one Keef solo (or duet with Mick), and not any double full of second-rate garbage. The size won't make it Exile...

Good post, Doxa. I'm with you, although I don't think they will record The Nearness of Yoú for the new album. They could fill up an entire new disc with songs they've done live, but never released on a studio album.

Excuse me? This is in reference to the discussion of lead guitar? Why don't you actually respond to my post intelligently. The Stones built their legacy without any notable guitar solos - only when MT showed up did that begin to change. Any good rock'n'roll SONG doesn't need one.
