A shame they don't have Dave on every song, just have Keith backstage and wheel him out for his two songs, and then let him watch from the sidelines what a Rock and Roll band should sound like......

It's a shame that people who dont like the main songwriter - and are not real Stones fans at all - seem to come here to bash them. That's a shame.

Beware of POSTERS WITH UPPERCASE NAMES - with a few honourable exceptions they are bashers...

Well,Well, the the IORR police have arrived "It's a shame that people who dont like the main songwriter - and are not real Stones fans at all - seem to come here to bash them. Jeez you guys are reading way too much into a comment made in a documentary. There is an unwritten code in rock n' roll, "TALK TRASH..." Of course rock stars bash each other. Happens all the time and then they get together, hang out, party, and laugh about it. All the stuff that is said...for example, look at all the trash Lennon used to talk about Jagger, and low and behold, they were good mates. Grohl was actually speaking pretty accurately about Keith and the whole jet set. Keith probably agreed with him! But it doesn't change the obvious love Grohl has for the Stones. He clearly adores them, hence such a fanboy full on passionate performance on Bitch and with Jagger on SNL.

I am not a fan of Poo Fighters at all. Practically loath them...just so generic and passionless. However, I deeply respect Grohl. The guy loves music, and is successful, good on him.

Don't worry Tony, there is some truth in your view here. Dave delivered some balls into that song. Which it needed. The band has got away with to many "impotent" versions of songs like this earlier.
You can say that Grohl injected some viagra or ass bum coke to the song...

and there's a another part that she dont get: - Keith Richards has never been stagediving, running around, jumping freakin out rock n roll performer - if you watch footage of Keith from the sixties, seventies, eighties..he's always been at the background, playing it cool - near Charlie's drum kit - so why on earth are people waiting that at the age of 70, Keith should start running around like Jagger or run around like 40 year old Grohl ? He never really did that when he was younger either.. As for Keith's playing - he plays OK, - might play little less, cause there's a 3 guitars on stage and this is Rolling Stones, not a hard rock heavy metal band.

It's not that, Seitan. He doesn't drive the band anymore. That is the problem. He is not the Captain nor the Coxswain. He's just struggling to do his part.

First I see Keith in much better shape then 2007. And stop comparing the 2013 Keith to the 1972 Keith, this man is 70years old, and still delivers fine pieces of music. Of course he would be in better shape if he never took drugs just green tea and pracised yoga every day. But that would not be the Keith we love. So simply give the man respect, for his work, for his compositions and that he still plays with our favorite band. For me every note he plays is art, nothing less.

You're right Seitan. If the winner is the most athletic on stage, they are in the wrong area. Can't compare a 44 and 70 years old men. And thruly I have really never impressed by Dave Grolles also known as Dave Croquenots or Godasses. He is not able to adapt himself to the band he was invited to play. It's just the lumberjack is out of the woods with his chainsaw. The link with the stones is grrr, but from the bear, not the gorilla.

Yeah - one could argue: When you have a heavy metal guitarist playing with a bluesy rock band - should the bluesy band play like a heavy metal band or should the heavy metal special guest guitarist look around who he's playing with ?

Should the rolling Stones play like a heavy metal band or should complaining heavy metal fans reconsider their attitude towards a legendary blues rock band ? One could argue...

and why did I have to see it ?? - I love the song but I have seen Keith before, and I have heard the song before and I've seen videos edited before from different shows..I didnt see Keith stagediving..not that I really cared, and may I say..Youre getting rather tiresome. I could google a video of Sympathy For the Devil from this tour and show you how Keith can still run a bit during his guitar solo, but why bother ? ...and I have no opinion about sport games, I love music. Youre starting to bore me, cause you know damn well as I do - that Keith has never really been wild stage performer like Jagger. Keith even admits that his job is to focus on his guitar playing, to be the safety net for Micks stage antics. And he's still doing it.

That was great! Dave gave them a booster shot which put fire in the belly. I'd spend the bucks on a Stones show with Dave from start to finish if MT is going to just play a song or two.

I would, moreover, love to see Jagger tour with the Foo Fighters. They played the best version of IORR since the studio version.

I don't mind someone like Dave Grohl coming in and mixing things up, in a good way. Too often the Stones go into autopilot and you sure as hell aren't going to get improvisation or a different arrangement. Sometimes it make you think a certain segment of the fan base just wants the songs delivered exactly as they were on the record over and over and over.

As for Keith's playing - he plays OK, - might play little less, cause there's a 3 guitars on stage and this is Rolling Stones, not a hard rock heavy metal band.

" Keith Richards has never been stagediving, running around, jumping freakin out rock n roll performer "
Sorry Seitan,You need to watch this......

and why did I have to see it ??
Now, go drop dead,

Rather ironic really, when you consider Mick has clearly been the safety net for Keith for at least 4 decades.

Dear Troll, - Without Keith's songwriting skills Mick would still be selling ice cream in the street corner.

Wow, you've figured out some English words to personally insult...nice job!

Then why in the Lemmy doc is he lashing out only at Keith and not at Mick? Answer: Because Keith has always spoken dismissively of Nirvana, labeling Cobain as a "lunatic" and Nirvana's music as "crap". Besides, in that touring situation in the late 90s, surely it's Mick calling the shots just as much regarding keeping the opening acts at a distance.

I disagree here. I think in that context - Lemmy - Keith Richards with his pirate image was a natural pick. Jagger the jetset superstar for ages do not belong to that game in defining the "coolest", the most "down to earth", street credible rock guy in the world. I take Grohl's point to be that Lemmy beats Keith in his own game. Lemmy is the real hero for him.

Anyway, I thought the Lemmy movie was not very good. I happen to see before it an English documentary of making some Mötorhead album, and it was superb, mostly consisting of the band members talking to each other, remembering the bad old times, being very relaxed with that witty, ironic English humour. A great doc. After that the Lemmy movie was a huge disappointment, with all these American rock stars and Hollywood actors repeating the same old pretentuous cliches (yes, Grohl being a typical case). Poor Lemmy seemed like lost in the middle of that crap.

- Doxa

Yes, you're referring to the Classic Album series documentary on the making of Ace Of Spades. That series always does a great job on its subjects. I also have that one on DVD.

But I also rather like the more recent Lemmy documentary because it does a good job fleshing out the lesser known points of his musical journey, such as with the Rockin' Vickers, with interviews of Lemmy's fellow bandmembers, and also with Hawkwind.

That Lemmy doc really doesn't need that moment with Dave Grohl, who comes across like an overly obnoxious teenager rather than a professional musician. The film doesn't need Grohl to explain that such figures as Keith Richards really aren't as tough and bad-ass as their image makes them out to be, because Lemmy himself does a good enough job of that early on in the film explaining via radio interview (which you hear in the clip where Lemmy is on his way to the record store--Amoeba Records--to purchase a mono box set of The Beatles) why he feels The Beatles were the tough and worldly figures, whereas when The Beatles were living rough in Hamburg The Stones were still living at home with their mums and dads in the London suburbs. In my opinion, Dave Grohl's mouth is far bigger than his talent.

Dave Grohl, pitched up, put in the energy, played a solo completely out of context with the song, and mercifully @#$%& off. That's it. In the history of the Rolling Stones, he might just be remembered by a few fans for his 5 minutes in Los Angeles, but not by the majority.

These guys have played with some of the best musicians in the world, hung out with the best musicians in the world, are close friends with the best musicians in the world....since the mid 1960's. The likes of Dave Grohl have done very little in comparison and hence that is why it's such a big deal for the guy to play with legends.

It's not something we need to get too bothered about that he made a few silly comments and I'm sure Keith won;t give a shit. YOu could tell by Keith;s expression that he was more of an amusemed than anything else.

Dave whores himself around quite a bit, especially with big names and I'm sure he was invited rather than gate crashed so can;t blame him for making the most out of it I suppose. Just a shame he took an opportunity that could have let us have Taylor show some guitar wizzardy rather than a lot of smoke and mirrors which is essentially what Dave Grohl specialises in. He's done it, he did bring a shot of energy, and now we wait for the next guest!

Is that not the point of these guest spots? If Lady Gaga wanted to be remembered in the history of The Stones then she would have came out naked. These guests aren't trying to stake a historic moment in the timeline of The Stones' history. They're just having a good time. Why can't you? Why must you be hyperanalytical?

You're comparing a band that has been around for 50 years, were around at the beginning of Rock and Roll in England, to someone who was born in 1969 and you're faulting him for that? Dave Grohl has done very little compared to The Stones. Well, obviously, the Stones have had a 20 year head start. And have you seen a list of artists he has worked with? It's a long list. I can say Justin Bieber has done very little compared to what Dave Grohl has done but that wouldn't be fair because he's only 19 years old.

You're right, Dave should have declined the invitation by saying "no, give Mick Taylor my spot". He could have been a hero to us! But no, he was a selfish prick. How dare he steal a song from Mick Taylor! Shame on him! That jerk!

Great choice by a great band on a great tour.

@#$%& yeah!

Bitch!

@#$%& YES!

That's a shame.,been a Stones fans probably longer than both of you,but l am not blind to the fact that Keith is fried and can't play anymore, just look at him standing in the background trying so damn hard to remember the licks to songs that he wrote and played many times over,it makes him look bad and it brings the band down,so when someone like DG comes along and shows us that the band still has it when pushed, then its time for Keith to retire honorably and watch from the sidelines, you don't agree? fine with me.

it's not a band without keith, that's the part you don't get.

and there's a another part that she dont get: - Keith Richards has never been stagediving, running around, jumping freakin out rock n roll performer - if you watch footage of Keith from the sixties, seventies, eighties..he's always been at the background, playing it cool - near Charlie's drum kit - so why on earth are people waiting that at the age of 70, Keith should start running around like Jagger or run around like 40 year old Grohl ? Well, thank you. Nice to hear that you liked it. Yes - I'm Scandinavian you know..so I know about Scandinavian folklore. A troll is a supernatural being in Norse mythology. In Scandinavian folklore trolls are extremely old, ugly and slow-witted creatures, that behave like disgusting grotesque human beings with bad smells, but they live far away from human habitation, under rocks, underground and deep in primitive caves -and they are afraid of sunlight, lightning, common sense and reason. So thank you. I tried my best to describe this one annoying hrrmm..Montana character here...A troll, yes. Thats her. Hahahahah. - What she writes is always very "harry potterish" !!

You do know who Dave Grohl is, right? You have listened to popular music after 1990, correct? You have heard of Nirvana, right? (The last great rock trio). I saw Foo Fighters open up for the Police in LA just a few years back and they blew the Police away. Them Crooked Vultures was a great experiment. I guess Grohl was good enough for John Paul Jones to be in a group with. Dave Grohl is keeping modern rock alive. There's a reason someone like the Stones seek him out. When it comes to guitar players they're not bringing clowns up on stage with them. There's a Nirvana boxset with a documentary on the group. You see them evolving with their old drummer, and it's okay. Then you hear them after Grohl joins and they're suddenly a world class band. Cutting him down might be remembered by a few fans, but not by the majority.

Most amusing...but alas, in your frenzy to reply you missed the point somewhat. For the record, I saw Nirvana at Reading, I've seen the Foo Fighters I am more than aware of contemporary music in every generation I have lived through (which is 5). Let me make this a little simpler for you...I was saying five main things

1) He brought energy to the gig (that's a positive by the way)

2) The choice of song was, in my opinion, the wrong one in terms of musical style..Grohl has a particular playing style and seemingly he is unable to adapt to the feel of a classic song and thereby wasted an opportunity.

3) He was a guest on one show in the long history of the Stones and therefore not worthy of such lengthy debate

4) He is a guest whore (would turn up to the opening of a summer fete')

5) We'll see what Dave Grohl is remembered for in a few decades time - trust me, it won;t be for many classics and for the record even Kurt Cobain didn;t rate him!

Too much analysis going on.

Did it move?

Would I have got shivers watching that live?

Oh yes.

To be honest, I think Dave also did IORR live with Mick better than the Stones ever did it.

And I love the LYL version.

The bottom line: The Stones sounded great with Grohl on Bitch; and, likewise, Jagger and The FF on Saturday Night Live played IORR better than any Stones live version of it.

Hence if Keith skilss have slipped due to age, among other things, then if he stuck to rhythm-fills and let Ron, or MT, or even Grohl play unrestrained lead on all songs the band would sound much, much better. There is no shame in Keith doing that. it takes a man to admit it -- and I love Keith. People I know who have met him said he was cool, friendly, a class act.

Dave Grohl is already a legend. He will be remembered as the drummer in Nirvana. That's enough. It doesn't matter what Kurt thought about him, Dave's drumming for that group speaks for itself. In a few decades time Dave Grohl will be remembered for that. And for going from drums to guitar, successfully, and leading a world famous rock group with it. How often has that happened? He doesn't even need everything that came after the Police, which is a lot, and still continues. He's obviously respected among the rock aristocracy. I'd say that along with Fogerty, he's the biggest 'get' of the Guest Stars so far.
