There's also an article of it in the superb '78 tour book made by Jean-Marie Moreau. It's a great book consisting of newspaper clippings from 1978. A very good book made by a fan for fans.
This is a great photo...I clearly remember Rolling Stone using another photo of the shoes as evidence of the crowd's disatisfaction with the show. I never knew Jagger called for the shoes. What a hoot! And shame on Rolling Stone.

They show all the spoken words from Jagger between the songs.
I was there and it was a great show. The day before sucked but the boys came back with avengeance on the Sunday afternoon. It was hot, hot, hot...high 80's or low 90's farenheit.
People were sporadically throwing their sandles at the stage. Between songs, Jagger says "we've got enough shoes, we don't need anymore". That only caused the crowd to throw more shoes during the next song. As that one ended, Jagger says "OK now I want all your shoes".....the place went nuts. Everyone started throwing their shoes at the stage. The air was filled from side to side of the stage with shoes flying through the air towards the stage! There were lots of sandals but also cowboy boots and high top running shoes. They had to take a short break while the shoes were cleared from the stage.
The show rocked hard and ended with Jagger holding a garden hose between his legs like a penis and spraying the crowd with cold water. I was right at the front in the pit that was flowing and pushing with the crowd and got good and soaked with the water. I think they were playing JJF at the time.
georgev, tanks 4 the info ,that must of been some show , 1 that i wish id of seen, but why did the people start throwing their shoes , back then it was money, hats ,shirts ,bras, pants ,i hav this radio show on cassette that i taped from 79 done 4 the e. rescue album where the interviewer asks woody ,where their any memorable moments from the tour ,& woody says ya the shoe show ,& the guy asks woody ,what do u mean ,& woody says this girl had thrown all her clothes on stage,& jagger said 2 her ,well u may as well throw your shoes up 2 ,,& thats when all hell broke loose
Anaheim 1978. I was there. Not only were a ton of shoes visible on stage, but there were also several bras. Etta James, Peter Tosh and the Outlaws were the opening acts. Peter Toss(God rest his soul) was happily passing and tossing out joints to the audience up front. Very cool guy.
