Seitan - The guy is a legend. He wrote some terrific songs which didn't give him the success they deserved.

There's some stuff I uploaded to the Stones Vault that may interest you.

PM me if you want to trade anything JT related.

Chatterbox. Chinese Rocks.

Enough for legend right there.

Being in The New York Dolls only seals it.

Chinese Rocks was entirely and solely written by Dee Dee Ramone and Richard Hell. So that's not much left for poor Johnny... Maybe the "So Alone" album?

He was a skilled guitarist and he was lucky to have a GREAT drummer behind him : Jerry Nolan. Check Johnny's Nolan-less 1980/90's tapes : they suck.

Nonsense-there's lots of great Nolan-less audio from the 80's and, album-wise, Que Sera Sera and Copycats (great covers album) from '85 and '88 are both outstanding and neither feature Nolan. From '84 on, especially, after he cleaned up somewhat, Johnny had some pretty kick-ass players with him most of the time (and sometimes that included Jerry). Having said that, I love Jerry Nolan's drumming.

Also, it's generally acknowledged that JT wrote the instrumental bridge in Chinese Rocks. I've always found that song kind of overrated, anyway. He wrote a lot of great, and often poignant, songs that were better than that.

I'm a huge JT fan and I would argue if all he ever did was play on the two original Dolls albums he would still have cemented his place in the pantheon of most innovative (try imitating his sound!) and influential rock 'n' roll guitar players.

JT being poignant in the 80s

Okay let's now apply a marxist view to JT : smoking smiley

Take this Karl Marx text and you'll notice Keith Richards is the 1st occurence in history (aka the grandiose historical one) and Jt is the second (aka the parody or the buffoon).

Beyond awful. Music for people who value drug addictions and haircuts over musical ability.

HAHAHAH - Then how come I love his music - I dont care about his haircuts or drug habits, - I dont care about Eddie Cochrans or Gene Vincent's drinking either -but I do love 50's simple rock n roll and that's what Johnny Thunders was doing - he was the 70's punk rock Eddie Cochran....and in many ways same as the early Stones or the Some Girls era Stones - just good old simple, back to basics, raw n roll.

(...but then again, I think Pink Floyd is the worst band in rock history - just crappy music for old pot smoking hippie grandfathers in their retirement homes. I think Pink Floyd is music for 100 year old hippies who value Sid's mental health issues over rock n roll)

>grinning smiley<

Here's a blues song from Johnny:

It might amuse you to know that Pink Floyd started out in the mid-60s playing R&B and Stones covers. The band name comes from two obscure U.S. blues men--Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

The first song they recorded in 1965 as a 5-piece, Lucy Leave, sounds closer to The Stones than to what we have come to know as Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd's 1965 lineup that featured Bob Klose (second from right) on lead guitar.

David Gilmour can rock out with the best of them--here's a clip of Gilmour standing in with The Pretty Things during a performance of their album SF Sorrow at Abbey Road Studios in 1998.

Here's a track each from Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

And here's Pink Floyd doing a bit of the blues from the More film soundtrack, the track More Blues from 1969.

I don't know much about Johnny Thunders but if he went to see the Stones in 1969, he can't be all bad.

EDIT: strettonbull, can you please post a link to what you put up on the Stones Vault?

No wonder this place can be such a draaaaag, man. JT was fabulous. David Jo is one of my five favorite vocalists. They weren't the Stones, but they were real and they were a blast. Rock and roll, baby.

On the one hand he represents what I loathe about the 70s NYC Rock scene -- too much too cool for school and too much heroin. On the other hand he was part of some great tracks. As in music.

Johnny Thunders WAS great, but he bought into his own legend and as a result, became sort-of a parody of himself...(hmmm, sound familiar?). Heroin probably destroyed his life, but the early stuff- i.e. Dolls, early Hearbreakers- classic. I grew up with the Stones and the Dolls, still love them both. Both have disappointed me at times, both could be maddeningly frustrating, but it's kind of like unconditional love- no matter what they do, I will always have a place in my heart for them. Even when they charge obscene prices for their concert tickets. (oops, that just slipped out.)
