Idea for a new Stones 'product'

We know they will tour, probably this year and part of next. Then we will get a DVD set of the tour. They tend not to repeat themselves (I'm not talking about the warhorses), so here's an idea. Since so many of the hardcore fans, who do indeed buy their DVDs, want off the beaten path numbers, why not a separate concert, a small place, after the tour, where they can play lesser played works?

It doesn't have to be a concert setting, but it might be a bit sterile to do it without an audience. (Although the rehearsals could make for great bonus footage, and could include songs not on the 'concert'.) This setup, concert/rehearsals, would be the perfect avenue to invite Bill in for a few numbers and interact with him in a warm way. And of course Mick Taylor.

In a sense it would be sort of like 'Stripped', but without the need to just play acoustic. They could play electric, uptempo numbers without feeling the need to have fireworks. The way to sell this is to do things they've never done. Bring in a French horn player for You Can't Always Get What You Want. A cellist and a flute player for Ruby Tuesday. A classical pianist for She's A Rainbow. A string section for Moonlight Mile.

And, since it's a DVD, members could talk about the songs, either to the audience, amongst themselves in rehearsals, or as interview inserts with talking head, or just voiceover ala Crossfire Hurricane.

This would be a good vehicle for the ageing Stones. It wouldn't require travel, new songs (unless they felt like putting one or two in), and Mick could choose to stay away for a while as they worked the older songs up amongst themselves. It wouldn't require a tour, although they could maybe do the concert once or twice in London at a smaller venue to get enough good takes. All of it could be underwritten and sponsored by some venture wanting to get its name out there by being associated with the Stones.

It would take the pressure off the band to play warhorses for a mass audience. It would be an interesting new 'product' to add to their catalogue, now that they're on the verge of exhausting their TV appearances and vintage concerts. Having all the surviving Stones, and Chuck and Darryl participate, would be a good endcap for the whole 50 and Counting era. And you would hope they would get some kind of kick out of playing numbers they created but never get the chance to play. I can see it now, Bill on bass with some hotshot marimba player and the Stones doing Under My Thumb proper.

hope they will do something different. probably they've gotten pitched on something like this..

a separate, non-performance event that just presents them playing whatever, for the fun of it, is a great idea.

I also think a good idea would be a new documentary along the lines of 'Reunited -The Return Of Mick Taylor To The Rolling Stones'..

Don't you think, just for a moment, that their wives probably said the exact same thing to them...'just go out to your fans and leave us alone!'.

Yes, until the wife inevitably tells him "time to get out of the house".

In actual fact, we owe the continuation of The Stones to Shirley--otherwise, Charlie would just vegetate at home and never venture out, not even if Mick and Keith called him.

True, but the odd jazz gig every blue moon won't feed the horses or fill the armoire closet(s).

Getting back to the original post, what a great idea, 24FPS.
I suggest that the audience should be made up of hardcore fans with perhaps the exception of the Stones' other halves and children - just to add to the atmosphere - with the only other "celebrities" being genuine fans, e.g. the novelist, Ian Rankin.

My idea for new Stones product would go something like this (jokingly):

Keith Richards brand heroin, cocaine, marijuana and hash. The product line would also include houkkas, pipes, syringes, and other accessories.

Put it in fancy packaging with the Stones logo on it and it will sell like mad.

These items will only be available for a limited time in the bizarro universe.

Another reason something like this might be a good idea is to keep their hand in. At this stage they simply can't go flying off to separate corners of the planet for 5 years after a tour and then groggily get back together. That's not going to work in their mid-70s. If Bill's grumpiness is any barometer of how they're going to be emotionally, it will be even harder to pull them together.

Forget the bullshit movies, jazz albums, carnival fair rockstar paintings, and staring at your navel in the Turks and Caicos for a while. You could create a new product using mostly material the Glimmers already have publishing rights to, and maybe throw in a new tune or two. The problem with this group was having Stu die on them. No one can push them around and make them do what's right. Well, it's our job now. Let the nagging begin!

You are totally logical and The Stones should do it. It would be their final recording and gift to the hardcore fans. They would make some additional millions too if they recorded this DVD (and audio CDs) in a small hall. Say Royal Albert Hall for two nights with two different set lists?

Will The Stones do it even if they were advised to by people they respected? I give it no more than a 40% chance
