OT: The sick, sick world of Nick Hornby...
Posted by: noughties ()

I`ve just started reading
the novel "Juliet, Naked" by Nick Hornby.
I`ve read 2 chapters.
For starters:
The author: Nick Hornby
The novel`s main person, and a fan: Duncan
Fictional singer/songwriter: Tucker Crowe
Juliet, Naked: a stripped version of a favourite album of his.

This main person so far
comes across as a real pitiful character,
more obsessed by his idol than his girlfriend.
All the book`s practical details
are soaked with irony. Does this person
really have a paralell in real life?
The only album that comes to mind
is The Beatles` "Let It Be, Naked",
released som years ago.

Read the book. Nice but forgettable.

Does this person really have a parallel in real life? Are you kidding?

I couldn't help laughing loud at the usual in depth anal-asys thread here on IORR while I was reading the book (mine included ...)

There is also a Stones reference at a certain point.

Nick Hornby is a very boring author who only writes about himself.

Yeah, I have the suspicion that he goes with the flow rather than cutting the mustard.

I love Nick Hornby. Juliet Naked was very strong.

High Fidelity was terrific, especially for music fans! Fever pitch, not so much but still ok. Need to check out that new (?) one.

I thought Juliet, Naked was a nice rebound after How To Be Good and A Long Way Down, both of which I enjoyed reading even though I wound up despising all the characters) but it still can't touch Fever Pitch and About A Boy, which I think are fantastic. Songbook is pretty decent, too - there are some especially affecting passages about his autistic son in there that will just rip you up.

High Fidelity is a great book (not a bad movie either) the rest of his stuff is not as good IMHO
Not sure about his taste in music to be honest-he cranked out some book about his 53 best songs or something like that. Not many good ones in there at all and no stones as I recall (I only flicked through it in a book shop)

Well, the 4th chapter settles it. I`m delivering the book back to the library this day. Too many words, too much smart-ass, too much drilling into the slightest move of the mind, too much popular culture...

Agreed. High Fidelity really is top-notch. The others are fine, but IMO he could stand to take more time on them. They don't have the same, ahem, richness of texture.

Come on Come on! You can't seriously compare Orwell-the greatest or second greatest essayist in the English language-to Nick Hornby. Bit like comparing the Stones with the bay city rollers. Well maybe not the bay city rollers-Status Quo perhaps

Ooops...didn't exactly realized the crime was that serious...just appreciate both of them as catcher of their time...
