Listening to the Dime boot and there is this weird interruption at the end of "Roll Over Beethoven" with the promoter explaining that CB is angry because his passport is missing pages and he wants the promoter to pay for a new passport or something like that...apparently he says he's going to pay for it so the show goes on...The guy has a French accent it seems, could it be the promoter of the "Casino de Paris" concert too?

Can't understand why this would bother someone. Just don't go to the concert. Same concept as those offended by some tv shows, just change the channel. Not everyone has the same opinions/taste. Do I really have to live in someone else's perfect world?

What these legendary people like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis need to do more of is TALK AND TELL STORIES AND TAKE QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE, and then play a little short bit at the end.

I saw Jerry Lee Lewis a couple of years ago at a music festival and it was terrible and sad, completely embarassing to watch him. And I love Jerry Lee! But I would GLADLY pay a little bit less, with different expectations, to see Jerry Lee Lewis take questions from the crowd, talk, tell stories about the old days, remembrances of his contemporaries, to have him give a little piano lesson and then play 3-4 songs, in a smaller venue.

Same with Chuck Berry! As a lifetime fan of his music, I don't NEED to hear him play all his hits badly, at 86 years of age. I need to hear him TELL STORIES or TEACH ME SOMETHING or watch him interact with the people who love and revere him, to let him know WE appreciate him! The love of the audience at a Chuck Berry show is more important than he is as a performer!!!

Can you imagine what we could learn from Chuck, about what it was like to sing his songs and do what he did during segregation in America, if we could get him to open up and find out whose music he listened to as a boy, his earliest memories, what he thought of the Chess brothers, or what the inspiration or meaning was for so many of his great songs? I'd pay to see THAT. I know they've all been interviewed a million times and it gets old, but there is so much that could be gotten from our living legends like this, if people just had the right expectations and vehicle for them -- instead of making a mockery of their legacy by having them be up there playing badly and out of tune.

Enjoyed your thoughts Turning to Gold.

I have always been a great fan of Jerry Lee but learned early on, after seeing him in an LA concert with The Doors headlining that he was a "mighty troubled" man, not to mention offensive. Subsequently I ran into many friends and relatives of JLL and I did NOT want to meet him. Just dig the music.

I remember Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell telling me how excited they were to run into Jerry Lee at an airport. And they grabbed Jimi and proudly introduced him to Jerry Lee -- who refused to shake hands with Hendrix. Noel and Mitch were never to forget this meeting which shocked them to the core.

I summoned up the nerve to ask Jimi about it. "It wasn't the first time and it won't be the last." he said. He deplored racism but his mind was always on music. And at various times he told me about certain black musicians that we all love who treated him like dirt on the chitlin circuit. An exception was B.B. King who was proud of Jimi's success.

Since you mention the "Killer" :

In the "Great Balls Of Fire" movie, an encounter happens between JJL and Chuck (they share the same bill), and the piano player says to Berry : "Go on you killer!"

Well, it seems that in reality Lewis said to Mr Berry : "Go on yu nigger!" so the Hendrix anecdote doesn't surprise me...

There is a difference between an agent and a local promoter. The guy you are talking about is Chuck's agent Patrick, the problem probably arose with the local promoter and Patrick was trying to sort it out, trying to negotiate between the two. Patrick is excellent and the only person in the business I know that truly cares for Chuck.

The promoter for the cancelled "Casino De Paris" show is a different person and has got nothing to do with the two people that I mentioned earlier.

There is a video out on JLL where he tries to teach some of his piano techniques. The video is horrible.

Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry are not really people that open up easily and they do have their reasons for it I am sure. Ever thought that they simply enjoy to perform the way they do even if you do not like it?

This is one bullshit story. It just never happened, but gets repeated over and over again.

Chuck was on a plane for some 15 hours and more or less walked straight onto the stage after his arrival.

Most people half his age could not do it.

However you know the way he has been performing for many years now and his general attitude towards shows (not rehearsing, relearning his lyris, out-of-tune guitar et cetera).

You are entitled to not like it, to call it "unprofessional" or whatever, but the same he is entitled to perform the way he wants to. He is not telling you to shut up either, is he?

Gents, behave! CBII is or will be reading this page...

In return that means if he was not reading people would have all right to misbehave.

I must say that some of the ass kissing just because a son of a Rock'n'Roll legend happens to occassionally read and post on this forum appears quite embarassing to me. And very un-Rock'n'Roll I may add.

He is also more than "just a son", he is a person in his own right and should be treated as such.

Not to worry. The one thing I've learned is not to have a glass chin. Some here would be surprised at who actually does follow this page (those affiliated with the Rolling Stones that is) and follow it closely. They have developed the same thick leather skin. Thank god for opinions, without varied opinion, life would be pretty bland.

CB II,
Fame and glory always comes with jalousy.
But the more people love a band/artist, the more they also become hard to satisfy.

I'm sad CB doesen't come to Paris, even if I probably wouldn't have managed to attend the gig.
Long live Chuck Berry. We are all thankful for the great tunes he created.

I suspected that. It makes sense to know what your fans/customers are thinking of you. Having said that, I love you Chuck Berry and Rolling Stones! Keep up the good work, the world is a better place because of you guys. smiling smiley

CBII, your guitar work on the Arena Moscow version of 'Johnny B. Goode' is positively slammin'. The tone kills, and your attack has the whole band driving forward. Really impressive; I had to go back and listen again!

When my mother was dying a slow, miserable death, Chuck Berry's music always made her smile.
