(Extended all-SFTD version now posted) Rolling Stones new Super Bowl ad for Mercedes Benz
Posted by: superrevvy ()
Date: January 21, 2013 10:59

UPDATE: EXTENDED ALL-SFTD VERSION ADDED ON PAGE 2

The ad will be 60 seconds. Here's the teaser...

The Super Bowl is in Mercedes-Benz’ house this year. But the automaker is also
running a 60-second spot in the fourth quarter of the game, and that spot was
teased on Jan. 20 during the AFC Title game between the Baltimore Ravens and
the Patriots on Fox. The spots don’t just tease the Super Bowl ad, but also
offer a hint of the new CLA-Class vehicles getting spotlighted, or gaslighted --
since the Super Bowl is in New Orleans, after all.

Actually, the verb "to gaslight" (drive someone crazy by manipulating their
sense of reality) is apropos.
In the teaser, the car blows into New Orleans,
blasting open the door of a French Quarter bistro (the Napoleon House), making
peoples' jaws -- and at least one waiter's flatware -- drop as if they've seen
Methuselah himself. Coffee boils in a cup, a thermometer spikes, and the jukebox
sputters and then begins playing the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil."
The tag line: "The Best or Nothing."

During Sunday’s AFC Championship, the automaker aired four 15-second and one
30-second version of the teaser. This week, there will be a behind-the-scenes
online spot hitting the Web.

The ad is positing the CLA-Class as something with a more impetuous, aggressive,
even dangerous personality, is clearly intended for a younger, if daring driver
-- he or she who wants entrance to the premium segment.

"The CLA lets us open Mercedes-Benz to a totally new audience. It's our new
gateway car; it's a very seductive design, very sporty and aggressive, and it's
for a younger audience -- and the young at heart.” The automaker is reaching out
to 30- to-40-year-olds, “so the CLA and the Super Bowl is a perfect
combination." In December Mercedes-Benz began to activate in New Orleans with
outdoor executions, such as one billboard reading “One Temptation No Saint
Can Resist.”

Somewhat related. Here's the stage design Lady Gaga has been using the last
few years for her "born this way ball". Although with Gaga, the "monster pit" is
the same price as the rest of the floor, with Monster Pit access wristbands
distributed to GA floor ticket holders who arrive first or with best costumes.

The Jaggers Family would have gained admission to The Monster Pit for sure...

Really, really sad. I never would have thought 40+ years ago that this song would be associated with selling a Mercedes, any car, or, indeed, anything. Pathetic. I don't know whether the Stones approved this, or ABKCO, or whatever, but boy is that sad.

Certainly they - or whoever okayed it - think it's GRRRReat!

Fitting that they should advertise for the demographic who can afford their tickets.

(Via CBS news. Pic not a CBS composite, but rather a live shot from the speech)

"Some colleagues still think that car-sharing borders on communism," Mercedes-Benz
Chairman of the Board Dieter Zetsche said, "But if that's the case, viva la
revolucion!" To be sure, a luxury-car maker like Mercedes is not actually promoting
communism. But during his CES talk, Zetsche pushed hard on a vision that the
company has for a greener future that allows drivers to reduce emissions by using
connected and social technology to easily find compatible passengers to share rides with.

they confirmed it a long time ago

"First car on this earth: The Benz Patent-Motorwagen, 1885, Mannheim, Germany.
Although several other German engineers were working on the problem at about the
same time, Karl Benz generally is acknowledged as the inventor of the modern
automobile. G. Daimler, W. Maybach and Karl Benz later combined their efforts
in a little company called Daimler Benz. It is a wide-spread myth that H.Ford
built the first car. He only invented the assembly line."

I saw the teaser last night during the AFC Championship game. I didn't know if it was new or not, but I posted about it in the "Rolling Stones In Commercials" thread.

P Diddy and Janis Joplin for Mercedes Benz via Stephen King. Mercedes apparently
loves magik. How else to get you to pay high prices? For your sacrifices.

they used janis in 1995 too

another janis one, with great live footage of her. well, maybe not a real
commercial, but a great live version of the song. well, maybe not a real
live version, but a great re-processed re-purposed version.

This is getting me angry. Just for that I am NOT going to be buying a Mercedes Benz next month like I had planned. Take that MB!

"Gaslight" actually means to convince someone they're crazy when they're not. (A subtle difference.) It was coined from the Ingrid Bergman film GASLIGHT, where Bergman's husband tries to convince her she's crazy, thus enabling him to get away with criminal behavior.

Didn't they agree to use "Satisfaction" to sell Snickers awhile back?

At least Sir Michael drives a Mercedes. Or is driven in one. The rest of the band don't mind riding in a lesser car, like a Cadillac, after a concert but Sir Michael always insists on a MB S-Klasse. He's very aware of his social status. That's why he, of course, didn't admit to driving a VW when he was asked on the VW sponsored European leg of the VL-tour.

yeah, well, H Ford did invent the assembly line, but it was once again Mercedes that perfected it

i don't think its been noted yet that this year's super bowl is taking place
inside the mercedes benz dome in new orleans, so the stones scoring the
mercedes benz ad this year carries just a bit of extra prestige. "Prestige"
is derived from the 16th century French, meaning "deceit, imposture, illusion,
especially when used to seduce." The Prestige was a pretty good movie about
such magic, and the word "prestidigitation" has the same roots.

I agree about the original more restricted meaning of the word. But it has since
been expanded to include any use of propaganda, advertising, or bullying
techniques to convince someone that their perception of reality is inaccurate.
For instance, internet trolls can be used to make people feel that spending
much more on something that they heretofore thought was reasonable is quite
normal, or even a bargain.

Or, another example: To attempt to persuade the average joe or jane that a quite
seasoned and reasoned commentator is actually a lunatic.

I always thouht that was a cheap shot by Zappa. If The Beatles really were only in it for the money they would not have stopped touring and risked making Sgt. Pepper instead of continuing to be lovable mop tops.

At least this commercial fits. These are rich guys, I'm sure at least one owns a Mercedes. It's not like when Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes sold "Blister In The Sun" to Wendy's. They've been feuding over that for years, because as their bass player Brian Ritchie points out, he is a gourmet and Gordon is a vegetarian.

The last time I saw the Stones (at the MGM Grand), their brilliant concert ended...and then the audience had to sit through a brief Radio Shack commercial on the video screen. The arena went totally dark—other than the video screen—so no one could move and we had to watch it. Distasteful, but everyone put up with it. (I don't think I've been in a Radio Shack since, either.)

Wow, that's pretty bad. I've never heard of that tactic before.

I have no idea how Radio Shack stays in business, they've become pretty obsolete. I went in there around Christmas, I forget what I was looking for, but they didn't have it. Or much of anything for that matter. It was just a bunch of junk laying around on tables like a cheap remote control car and a "make your own transistor radio" kit and crap like that. It looks like mostly all they do these days is sell phones. But I think most people get them from Apple and Sprint stores and stuff like that, not buy them at Radio Shack. And even though it was Christmas and the mall was PACKED, I was the only person in Radio Shack. I felt bad for the guy working there, he looked so bored and happy that somebody actually walked in, then I just walked out after a minute.

I never thought it was aimed just at the Beatles. And of course Zappa was just mocking himself.

I am happy to say that I have not given the Stones a dime in 35 years.

People have expressed surprise and disappointment that such a song as SFTD should be associated with MB, but even back then The Stones always associated themselves with pricey cars. Or have we forgotten what it means to be a rock star in the first place? Recall also that when Lennon was writing Revolution he was also driving a Rolls Royce--or, should we say, being chauffeured around in one.

They (The Rolling Stones; Jagger-Richards) don't control ABKCO Music ie any songs with ©(Year here)ABKCO Music, which is up to some songs on Exile. ABKCO can do what they want.

There will be a 90 second version of the ad released on youtube the middle
of next week...

Possible SPOILER: The rumor is that the Devil himself will be driving the
car. I wish the rumor was that Jagger will be playing the Devil, but thats not
the rumor. Unless I just started it.

Here's the car. Quite uh prestigious looking for only 30 thou I think...
