Actually I have a bit of a soft spot for Are You Passionate. Guilty pleasure.

there's no reason for guilt. unless you know something we don't know, of course.

I think the problem with AYP? Was that expectations were so high with the Booker T and the MG's thing. And it came out a bit sanitised. also he did that thing where he throws in something that - no matter how good - just doesn't fit (Going home). See also Motorcycle Mama on Comes a time and Ordinary people on Chrome Dreams.

Actually Chrome Dreams should be in my "worth a listen" list. Also if you took side 1 of Hawks and Doves and spliced it with side 2 of American Stars and Bars you would have a classic.

Loved the International Harvesters live one from recently also. key track - Amber Jean.

That still leaves loads of sub-par rubbish though. Life is probably my least favourite. should have been called Lifeless!

Shit, I forgot Sleeps with Angels and Freedom. What a catalogue.

Fork in the Road should be retitled "shit in the road" to paraphrase Keef.

sleeps with angels never worked for me, but most of my neil buddies think it's one of his best. there are two songs on it that are almost carbon copies (musically)...sorta like those two on keith's main offender. ripping one's self off is bad enough...doing it on the same record is another thing altogether.

That would be super...

My faves:

"Neil Young"
"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"
"On the Beach"

From "After the Gold Rush", "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". "Harvest" has moments
of glory and bits of kitsch. Farther along, I like "Shots" and "Southern Pacific" off "Re*ac*ter"
and "Hey Hey My My" is great. "Harvest Moon" had moments of the old magic, LOVE the title track.
"Silver and Gold" has a number of gems, too.

"Philadelphia" may be the most powerful thing he's ever recorded.

A quick video list:

"Psychedelic Pill" is rather good but monotone, and at his stage in his career,
sounds too much as other stuff he's done ... he's been guilty of this before,
but it's glaring ... MUCH would have rather preferred a Springfield show filmed
at Red Rocks with some musical rarities thrown in. Lotsa stuff hasn't been done
in YEARS. Missed opportunity, and by the way Stills speaks, it ain't happenin' again
soon. Neil thinks it's an oldies act. But so's The Horse. Some of the new material
would've fit BS fine, live if not recorded. Pity. Would've kicked everyone up a notch.

Any one here seen an amazing film of him shot on his ranch in 71 by a Danish film-maker? It has been shown on German TV recently. Hope it gets a release as its the best footage I've ever seen of him. He plays songs from After The Goldrush and Harvest.

Impossible to have a constant favorite w/Neil. There was actually a time when r*e*a*c*t*o*r was my fave. "Opera Star" is totally goofy yet rocking. I have tried listening to Landing on Water. Can't find anything redeeming. Everybody's Rockin'? It's passable for what it is, but good it is not. The one that stands out to me is Old Ways from '83. THIS was more a followup to Harvest than Harvest Moon was. Only one dud of a track on there (Misfits), imo.

"The economy was gettin' so bad, I had to lay myself off
But workin' was a habit to me, so I kept showin' up anyway
Then one day things turned around, I got my back pay
Old ways, comin' through again."

(From the song Old Ways)

Can't really go wrong with anything Neil did in the 70s. I'm really looking forward to the Archives vol 2 which covers this period, whenever Neil decides to put it out. Speaking of which, does anyone here have the blu ray of Archives volume 1? Some extradorinary stuff in there. Woof!

Naturalust, I look forward to further thoughts on Neil's book.

I thought he expressed well how he felt he is in transition, as a man,
partly from giving up drugs.

Wouldnt it be interesting if Neil played some concerts with only 4 songs which timed in at an hour and 45 minutes total? Three half hour jammed out versions and then one "short" 15 minute song as an encore.

One reviewer of Trans likened it to Daleks copulating. A bit harsh, since Like An Inca was Neil at his best, whereas Transformer Man works better on Unplugged.

Neil is best when he does either rock with Crazy Horse, or acoustic folk/country material. Are You Passionate was his attempt at soul, but it was, alas, a courageous misfire.

Neil has been known to put material together, recorded at various sessions. For example, Freedom is a case in point of this, in that it is a mixture of acoustic balladry, and loud rock; yet it works well.

Neil also records a lot of older-written material for albums: i.e Country Home was written in 1976, yet it crops up on 1990s Ragged Glory. Likewise, Homegrown on La Noise.

I happen to appreciate La Noise too, but loathe Fork In The Road.

I think you mean HitchHiker from La noise. Great song. I saw Neil a couple of years ago while on holiday in the States. we took a road trip out to Louisville - Bert Jansch was supporting. He was playing electric but unaccompanied which we were not expecting, plus loads of new songs some of which didn't even show up on the subsequent La Noise album which was still about a month away from release. at first it was a thrill hearing Down by the river played this way. By the time of Cortez the killer tho it was getting jarring. I just wanted to hear some bass and drums.

It took me years to appreciate SWA, and I still find it a mixed bag. It is a depressing record. Neil was caught up in all that grunge nonsense, and feeling guilty (?) about Kurt Cobain. Prime of Life is an all-time classic tho. You should give that one another spin Tod.

also has worst lyric ever on Western Hero. Something like:
"He wore a long coat to the ground
He wore big boots that made a sound"

I am a big fan of his.

breathtaking ... divine ... something for eternity ... what can I say ...

Anytime I come across his music it touches and catches me anew.

Actually, I was about to start an OT thread about Neil when I noted this one. There are some questions on my mind.

Has anybody read his book A Hippie-Dream? How is it?

Has there ever been any contact or relation between Neil and the Stones?
(All I found was some shots of Neil and Mick at the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute 2007.)
