the 90's were such a crowing decade...you had sheryl, the counting crows and these guys. it was a confusing time but we got thru it.
spsimmons try to listen to "Before the frost..." Album made of new songs recorded live in 2009 at Levon Helm's Woodstock, NY studio. Great record.Quote

I love the Black Crowes, but I never cared for their live stuff. Granted, I have never been to a concert, but have heard the recordings. I got to say that I did enjoy the stuff they did with Jimmy Page.

Rock and roll,

I have listened to that record a lot. The Black Crowes are "traditionnalists" and one can hear the musics that have influenced the band; the stones, Led Zep, the faces, even some prog rock (keyboard tones) and also US rock, Dylan, southern rock, blues, country, gospel etc... It is an amazing record because all those musical influences have been integrated in a very subtal way that makes them not immediately noticeable. Great work.Quote

Made even better with the downloadable tracks that round out the double set "Before the frost...after the freeze". You can tell Chris Robinson has been taking some voice lessons, plus they seem to take a bit of a country rock turn on many of the tracks.

Pffff, I'll never get the amount of crap the Crowes get here. If the Crowes are a 'boring pseudo allmans jam band', then the Stones are 'a boring pseudo Chuck Berry cover band.'
Whatever you might think of then, these guys can flat out play!

I'm not that familiar with Jackie Greene - can anyone recommend some gigs or albums I should check out? I'm hoping a new lead guitarist will shake things up a bit - I hated Luther Dickinson's playing style with a passion so this line-up change is most welcome for me. (Really I'm hoping Marc Ford has changed his name to Jackie Greene.)Quote

I'm a hardcore fan of the Crowes but I can understand why they get crap, and sometimes I think they deserve it. They were very vocal at the start of their career about how fake music at the time was, how the Stones, ZZ Top et al had sold out and got lazy yet they fell into those very same traps as the years rolled on. I think they've produced albums of genuine quality (Southern Harmony, Amorica) that stand up against anything but I think creatively they can't get out of the Stones/Faces dead end.

Without Ford and Harsch they are not really great for me...

No one will care. They'll barely sell tickets. Clear Channel has been playing them all month, they sound dated in a bad way. I predict they will be as big as a Cars reunion.
You know what? It is clear you don't like them. Cool, fine, can't change your mind. And one thing I have learned after posting thousands of times here for the past six years, when someone has a musical opinion of a band, you can't debate it and change their mind. That is cool. It is what it is. However, I do like pointing out when those opinions are based on inaccurate perceptions and cliches. The one thing you miss about The Black Crowes, is they really don't give a flying hoot about selling tickets. They are a small band, who like to play great live rock and roll shows. They play small places and sell tickets at very reasonable prices, and play. They typically change up their set lists significantly night after night. They play deep cuts and great covers. They purposely play interesting clubs, and venues. And they often play close to two and half hour shows. So, their "reunion" is not to milk a cash cow. It is to get back together and play music together. They feel they have a need to play with each other again. Cool. I am on board.

No one brings out the haters like the Crowes....except maybe Oasis.

Hits? You mean She Talks to Angles and Hard to Handle? Those were their biggest hits. They do regularly play them both. But not every night. If your a casual fan only into the "hits" you would probably be disappointed seeing them live as they do a lot of deep cuts, but also the more popular ones as well, such as Sting Me, My Morning Song, No Speak No Slave, Black Moon Creeping, etc.

There's nothing to hate about that fact; two fantastic bands.
