Jagger:"Gimme Shelter...seriously!!"

I think I posted this a few years ago, but I thought it might be fun to revisit the 1988 solo show in Tokyo that nearly cost Jagger a limb or two.

Wow, I'd never seen this before, truly frightening. Mick was lucky he didn't get seriously injured. He must have been scared, he doesn't sound good.

He looks/sounds scared from the very start.

Just bloody awful. Lisa held it together though. Amazing how long she's been singing that song.

Almost as frightening as the one with Lady Gaga...

He looks and sounds like somebody who took too much coke in one go. It knocks you off your feet for 10 minutes. This wry smile, this chewing, it sure looks like it.

Kinda reminds me of some of the old acdc footage where Angus goes into the audience on Bons shoulders. never a good idea.

ACDC did it for years. He was on Brian Johnson's shoulders when I went to one of those shows. They just popped up in the audience the row in front of me and all of a sudden everybody round us did pretty much what you see here. It's never a good idea to put the band in the crowd but it can be quite interesting to watch from a distance.

I guess in the UK health and safety and insurance premiums have put a stop to this. I've not seen it happen for years at a big gig.

Our own Johnny Halliday did the same around 1990 : he entered the stage by... (ahem) walking through the crowd from the back of the stadium.

He nearly got eaten alive by his fans... moody smiley

It's a miracle they managed to make any progress in that crowd, even the mighty JC looked a bit winded at the end of the ordeal ;-)

That type of "event" probably explains why all the bodyguards, especially Mick's, are still extremely careful these days even when faced with some nice and mellow fans, you can never predict what's going to happen! At the Trabendo it looked like overkill to have (at least) 5 guys, 2 between the audience and the band, and 3 on the side of the stage, but if someone had really lost it, it might not have been enough.

Frightening on all kinds of levels!

In hindsight, it sort of makes for a brilliant piece of performance art. I am 100% certain they didn't intend for it to go so wrong. But with THAT song, what a great entrance! And Mick shows some genuine emotions...perhaps the first since 1962.

Check out the look he gives to the guitarist around 4:00. Very telling.

This tour is also interesting as it clearly influenced the Stones stage production for future tours. Very slick sound. Lot's of posturing. Too sterile for me.

I'm glad he made it out alive, otherwise we wouldn't have had Goddess in the Doorway.

Mick looks completely out of it from the start.
I don't feel sorry for him, I feel sorry for his security team.

Leave the stage diving, crowd surfing and audience walkabouts to guys like Iggy Pop and Peter Wolf!

God Bless The Rolling Stones!

I thought Jagger was clean since 1980 ... although I agree with you, he looks awkward. And Jimmy Rip can't play the Riff currectly.

This is as fareaway you can get from the Stones, this Jagger solo tour even if Steel Wheels tour was a little Las Vegas. Glad this days are over. I think Jagger didn't think clear in the 80´s.
