I would have loved to hear Lady Gaga do a version of Tell Me, just to see what she could come up with.

This reply is regarding the Mike Douglas clip.
It's astonishing how little regard he had for the Stones as guests on his show.
He couldn't make the effort to find out their names ??
He may not like their music or have heard of them before, but since they are guests on the show, it's only professional courtesy to know their names.

The bit with the girls from the audience was kinda cool, tho.

They were relative nobodys then. Less popular that the Dave Clark Five or the Beachboys or Gerry and the Pacemakers. I thought Mike Douglass was quite respectful .considering.

I don't think Mike Douglas was disrespectful at all. He went on and chatted amiably for a bit and gave them an opportunity to crack a few jokes--which is certainly more than they got from Spleen Fartin on The Hollywood Penace. Did you notice the whole band cracking up during the miming of Tell Me? Even the audience could tell it was being piped in--nothing more hilarious than a mimed song that just fades out all of a sudden. But notice also during the 2 songs they did do live--Carol and Not Fade Away--how Keith kept turning round to play off Charlie, which speaks to the heart and soul that is the back and bone of those Rolling Stones.

The Mike Douglas show was pretty good. I've seen the whole episode, and it's pretty interesting how the other guests on the show made insulting remarks about the Stones. The older generation just didn't care for these guys at all, and to think this was their first American tour - they had nothing more than a cult following in the States at the time.

Well, it must have been mystifying to the older generation of Americans. Rock & Roll had already come and gone, as a fad, replaced by pop. Even Spector's stuff was radio friendly. And rock and roll had never been taken seriously. And what was with the long hair? Very, very perplexing to the audiences of those days. Brits coming over here to play music they'd already heard and moved on from? A bit ridiculous. Here, let's put them all in cute little suits and say such witty things as, "The Redcoats Are Coming!" What, the Stones won't dress up? And some of them are kind of ugly aren't they? Say, what kind of entertainers are these? It's a joke, right? Tell us they're putting us on, Dino. And sing that one about the moon and the pizza pie. Now go comb your hair with olive oil. That's a good boy. You menefreghista, you.

Brian Jones was making insulting remarks about Mick, In comparison Mike Douglas was a complete gentleman. The Stones were unknowns at this time, comparable to Gerry and the Pacemakers or Freddy and the Dreamers.

I think Brian meant it in fun and nothing more. Mike Douglas was a complete gentlemen. Even when the other guests on the show were criticizing the Stones he tried to defuse the conversation by thanking them for being on the show.

Yes, the Stones had more like a small cult following at this time in the States. The Beatles and the Dave Clark Five had numerous hit records, and Peter & Gordon and the Searchers also had hits in the States before the Stones even released their first record there.

Also, The Animals had a big number one in the States in 1964. The Animals started about the same time as The Stones, around 1962, and were playing the same type of music, only raunchier even than The Stones. They might have beaten The Stones to the punch earlier in the UK as well had they only come down to London from Newcastle a bit earlier, but one of the band members among The Animals still had to finish school in Newcastle, so they didn't appear on the London scene until sometime after The Stones made their first dent in the UK singles market.

Funny how Bill seems to have been "airbrushed" out of the first number [Around And Around] by the camera crew, who seem to think they're filming a 4-piece band. They don't show Bill until 3:20 in that clip--and he's got the largest guitar and the longest hair!

Bill has his bass in the weirdest position, with the end pointing towards some star constellation or something.

Gerry from the Pacemakers had his guitar up really high in the dork position as I call it.

Gerry said he did it for vanity, so he could keep looking at the cameras without having to look at the guitar fretboard.

Keith has his guitar in just the right cool position.

Bill did that to keep the stage lights out of his eyes so he could scan the audience for girls. There is even a picture from one of the recent 02 shows where Bill his holding the fretboard up around his eyes and half-squinting through his glasses.
