Always have wondered who did the four string in that band. especially live.

Manzarek's left hand, on the keyboards. No bass player.

They never had a bass player as far as I know.

They have used a bass guitarist in some studio stuff (the LA Women album) but never live as far as I know.

For Doors fans, they sell some great shows on the Doors web site, similar as the Dead's Dick's Picks shows. Worth checking out

They never had a bassist and as KSIE says, I think Manzerak did something on his keyboard. I'm unsure though, I think they may of used a session bassist on Morrison Hotel.

I can recommend "The Ultimate Doors Companion" by Doug Sundling. It has all the facts about additional musicians etc.

On stage, Manzarek had a special little keyboard instrument he played the bass on with his left hand. I have seen it mentionned in that Doors in Europe DVD, but I can't recall exactly what it was.

He used a Fender Rhodes bass piano.

It was Carol Kaye ... and I found her web-site:

Of course not in live, but in studio.

As it was already said on stage Manzarek played bass lines on the keyboard with his left hand. He did that also on their debut album but they decided that in studio real bass sounds better, so from Strange Days onwards they had session bass player. But actually I don't remember wheter it was the same person or did they use different people on different records.

I've heard of her. She played bass on alot of stuff with the beach boys, at brian wilsons request, for example pet sounds and the original smile material.

The bass notes came out of Jim Morrisons ass.

When I saw them, in the 60's in Los Angeles!!!

Yes it was Manzarek handling both duties; Keyboards & Bass..

Jim was a strange fellow that night, but the Doors where a GREAT band live!

Jerry Scheff was the bassist on the "LA Woman" album.

(edit) Sorry, Justin, you already answered this.

there is an awesome kids in the hall skit (a canadian comedy troup) who do a bit about a record store owning doors fan who warns a young man not to get into the doors, cause there wont be any new music, and no one else has ever pulled off having a band that big with no bass

Well, I remember a blues guitarist named Lonnie Mack to have played bass in Morrison Hotel album, most notably in "Road House Blues". I had the original paperboard cover LP once upon the time but I sold it for a good money to buy a dress for my girl friend as a birthday present. She left me immediately. What a loss. Namely it was a good album (what a romantic fool I was). I also had an album by Lonnie Mack back in the 80's in which there is a nice duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan, called "If You Have to Know",

Wasnt that after he got his Hammond in 1970?

I thought it was the footpedals on the Manzareks keyboard.

Speaking of Road House Blues, the harmonica player is Mr. John B. Sebastian.

It was the foot pedals.

No, this bass pedals thing is wrong! Ray used the Fender piano-bass Rhodes I posted earlier, there is no doubt, you can see and hear it clearly in the various live videos of the time.
