I think it's fine to say goodbye, but maybe the better thing to do is just send bv a thank you email and let it go at that. Otherwise, it's a bit like you are just asking for attention. Who knows what anyone's motivations are, usually don't even know what my own are, so I am willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt...
