dylan's great whether he's any good or not...

Yeah- nothing will ever touch Hard Rain and Before the Flood (w/The Band) live albums. Those when he was best at live performances-IMO.

aside from his '66 gigs, i'd agree with that....

I will concur with his on/off nights as I've been on the receiving end of both varieties.

Good luck!

I concur, my first Dylan gig was Blackbushe which was brilliant. My second was Earls Court three years later, which was dire (mainly songs about Jesus). Experiences since have wavered between the two, but I'll admit it's probably 7 or 8 years since I last saw him...

Time flies, I saw him first 25 years ago, then last 15 years ago.

Dylan is fantastic if you're willing to be open and accept the fascinating arrangements of older songs. I think he even uses his ravaged voice to good effect.

Knopfler was a drag. Slow, dirge like songs. Not one uptempo song, and only one Dire Straits song. Nothing to show off his guitar skills. If he had given the people a little more show they might have been more open to Bob's experiments.

I am a big Dylan fan, though I am not so keen on the recent releases and some
performances have just not been very satisfying. Hoping you can weigh in with
your review.cheers

Before the Flood is one of the finest live records I ever heard, and is the album that made me be a Dylan fan.

I haven't heard it in years, I'll get it soon and refresh my memory.
I only remember it was much better than the 1974 album w/ the Band,
off which "Wedding Song" was on the other hand one of Dylan's finest song ever recorded.

and no Dylan album can come close to 1966 tour.
I used to have an amazing bootleg with many shows from 1966, but I lost it...
damn. long time without Dylan!

IMO, Bob's best tour ever, after 1966, was European Tour 1978 and US tour 1978. The US tour was more uneven than the European one, though.

Europe and US was very very different from the Japanese/Australian tour of Feb - March 1978....which was quite dull and lifeless, as evident on "At Budokan"

The Bootleg Series Rolling Thunder Review trumps both those I think. Fantastic release!

Don't expect a Vegas show. The performer might even challenge you.

Sometimes, it's a challenge just trying to figure out what song he's singing

I second that emotion. BTW the next Bootleg Series release is supposedly from '69/'70 -- Isle of Wight? Cash sessions?

The Bootleg Series Rolling Thunder Revue sounds fresh and inspired, while the Hard Rain show sounds like a band on its last legs.

The 1999-2000 Dylan shows (with Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton in his band and before Bob started playing keyboard onstage) were the high water mark for the Never Ending Tour. His band hasn't been the same since Larry left after 2004. The recent shows have lapsed into a certain sameness.

I do miss Larry Campbell; I wonder if Bob fully appreciated him. I liked Bucky as well though from what I've read he just got burned out by the end of his tenure.

The only time i saw dylan was when he was into the gospel music and to be honest it was pretty boring apart from one accoustic rendition of ' it aint me babe ' which was fantastic and from that one song i could see what all the fuss was about from my mates who was more into dylan than me.

I've heard a mixed bag of reviews. Still looking forward to it.
I'm going to see him tomorrow night. Can't wait.

Maybe he was disappointed. He may have had unrealistic expectations. Some people still go to his shows thinking he's going to do Lay Lady Lay and it's going to sound exactly like the record.

The IORR forum definitely prepared me for this show. It was a thrill to see the legend up on the stage. I couldn't understand much of what Dylan sang but his back up band was hot. He did play three songs from Highway 61 Revisited which was cool. I was hoping he'd play some deep cuts like 4th Time Around or If You See Her, Say Hello. No luck. Overall, it was an enjoyable show and I'm happy I saw him. However, IMO I saw Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse about a month ago and that concert blew Dylan away.

Seeing The Who in late Novemeber, looking forward to that as well.

Hi Odeon,
which of the 2 Birmingham shows of 1981 did you see? Just wondering....
They're both available in great quality on aud recording. Meanwhile they're not as good as the Earls Court shows of 1981, performancewise, they're still terrific shows. Bob never had a better voice than he had in 1978-1981

1) "I'm gonna go see Woody Allen."
2) "Oh cool! That should be really funny--I love his movies and comic insights."
1) 'Well......"

1) "I'm gonna go see Jonathan Richman."
2) "Oh cool! 'Roadrunner' is awesome--should be good."
1) 'Well...."

1) "I'm gonna go see Bob Dylan."
2) "Oh cool! I remember the Concert For Bangladesh--cool Levi jacket, that trademark curly hair, acoustic guitar....sounds great!"
1) "Well....."
