Going to my first Dylan concert ever tonight
Date: November 10, 2012 00:16

I've heard a mixed bag of reviews. Still looking forward to it.

I find Dylan to be very on, or very off.

Hope you get an on night.

Don't expect a Vegas show. The performer might even challenge you.

Even if it was a certainty that Dylan was going to suck, I'd still go see him (I have, but if I never had) just to see a living legend and a cultural icon. That's just me though. The first time I saw the Stones I was so in awe of them that they could have farted on their instruments for 2 hours and I would have loved it. Just so happened it was a good show. There are few people I find so iconic that I would say that about though.

When I saw Dylan he was pretty good, but that was several years ago. I mean, it's Bob Dylan. The guy is a hero to even my heroes. It will at least be interesting, let's say that.

I agree No Code. I am thrilled to be seeing a legend. I checked out his setlist from the last few weeks, should be really cool.

Don't worry, Dylan's pretty good live and has a smoking band...Just don't expect him to sound like his former self...Expect a lot of strange arrangements of old tunes...

Don't expect things to sound like the records. He constantly reworks his arrangements and his phrasing. About 1/4 of the audience will walk out early. Although a lot of people tell me he's unintelligible, I can usually understand everything he sings. EMBRACE THE PHLEGM!

Also love the man and music. Last time I saw him it was like "Weekend at Bernie's" Propped up at the keyboard with his back to half the audience of 10,000 the whole friggin night !!!

With Mark Knopfler's band opening you can't go wrong. I'm going to to see the Dylan/knopfler show in Boston on the 18th. Can't wait.

Knopfler has frequently been joining Dylan on stage at recent shows for 2 or 3 songs. Have fun!

Also, don't expect a TEMPEST-fest: so far he's only played "Scarlet Town" and "Early Roman Kings" -- once each.

You can't understand what he's singing, but you will understand that it is great.

I will concur with his on/off nights as I've been on the receiving end of both varieties.

Good luck!

i just got back from dylan and knopfler tonight......it's a sit down show. neither are rocking hard though people did dance to 'watchtower". hadn't seen dylan in 10+ years. his voice has not improved. i heard he changes the tempo so much in order to avoid people singing along (he hates that). seems to work. no one tried.

I love Bob Dyland. He is obviously a legend. But I see him 3 times, and 3 times disapointed.
When I saw Mark Knopfler and Dylan, everybody LOVED the show of MK (me first) but I can tell you that at the end of the show of Dylan, the Arena was almost empty. Everyone was totally disapointed. The Dylan of those years is not the Dylan of the Unplugged in New York (95)...

i was the only one to light my lighter during "like a rolling stone" tonight. i also fell asleep for a minute or two during another song.

I concur, my first Dylan gig was Blackbushe which was brilliant. My second was Earls Court three years later, which was dire (mainly songs about Jesus). Experiences since have wavered between the two, but I'll admit it's probably 7 or 8 years since I last saw him...

When I saw him back in 88 with Tom Petty I was disappointed.
Haven't been back since, and I never will.
Always looking forward to his records though.

THat must have been 1986 in US or 1987 in Europe.
1986-1987 as well as 1990-1993 were his very worst years for live performances in many peoples opinion, incl. mine.

I'm through with seeing Dylan live. He was amazingly good in the late 90s and early 2000s though; those shows I saw back then were among the best shows I've by any artist

I've seen him live four years ago and the show was amazing! one of the best concerts of my life.

It was with Tom Petty in Europe.
The only highlight of the evening was the guy from the birds. Roger McGuinn? He played eight miles high, and it was memorable.
I indeed have a 1995 bootleg of a show of his. That's quite an amazing show.
From the reactions here I gather he has his ups and downs. A lot of down evenings though.

Yeah- nothing will ever touch Hard Rain and Before the Flood (w/The Band) live albums. Those when he was best at live performances-IMO.
