Classy people.

Which is why it's always best that we view celebrity with the deceptive facade of myth and fantasy. If we get to know who they really are, through such things as biography and published editions of personal letters, we may come to realize that we don't really like them all that much, and we resort to being judgmental.

I see your point, but I think intelligent people should be able to separate the personal from the professional. I try not to be judgemental about anything, I haven't lived a perfect life and I don't know anyone else who has either. But then I come from a long line of lovable f-ups. grinning smiley

Well, not always. Case in point: Brian Jones. There can never be a modern discussion about what a great musician Brian was. Very early into the discussion, someone will throw in the woman-beating bit, and the discussion degenerates from there. These elements were not known in the 60s when he was viewed as the golden-haired rock god that he once was, and it affects the way a good many otherwise intelligent people view him [and his work as a result]. It would have been better if we had not come to know of these details.

Jagger letters

The Guardian, Tuesday 13 November 2012 21.00 GMT
I was interested to read about Marsha Hunt selling Mick Jagger's letters to her (Mick Jagger's secret love letters up for sale, 10 November). Many years ago it came to the notice of a journalist that I had hundreds of love letters from Mick Jagger. She tried to persuade me to publish them, which I did not want to do, as it happens. Mick Jagger got wind of this and to my amazement I heard on the Radio 4 news that I was involved in a court case regarding this issue. Mick Jagger had put up an injunction preventing their publication on the grounds that while I owned the paper they were written on, he owned the words. I was not even informed of this by his legal party.

I was so disgusted I sent most of the letters back to him. However, a few have turned up over the years; my fifth grandchild opened an old book at my house recently and one fell out. I wonder if he will stop Marsha from publishing her letters to him.

Did he copyright them? If not, he doesn't own them.

She owns the letters (and can therefore sell them) , but he retains the publication rights.

There's seems to be a difference between publishing letters and selling them. I wonder why Chrissie didn't put hers up for auction as Marsha has. Maybe she still can, unless she doesn't want to part with the originals. If not, it will make a nice legacy for her family, as RS-related material is sure to grow in value.

And there's a BIG difference between Chrissie and Marsha.

To me, its not about the supposed legalities and what is legally proper/allowed on her part -
It just lacks a certain integrity when you sell something that private without that person's approval. I mean, these are aren't exactly the letters of Abraham Lincoln.
'historical value' my ass - its all about money.
Exactly what is her standard of living that she can't afford to pay utilities? Karis seems to be more than capable of helping her mother.....and I'm pretty sure Mick would have helped out.....
Mick has been a dog in his past for sure - but it doesn't excuse, IMO, a shallow move like this. Some of these women need to rise above it.

Don't you think the reason a book from Anita or even a negative interview about Keith has never appeared is that Keith pays her bills? Rich people are expected to pay to keep their secrets, or else the most embarrassing secrets turn up. I would bet my last shilling that, one way or another, Mick will buy these letters back.

Anybody who pays for these letters (apart from Mick Jagger) has a serious mental problem.

Not one of the Mick defenders here, but how would you like it if your private love letters were published?

Not defending Mick - just commenting on the classlessness of selling your (and someone else's) private life to the highest bidder.
Again, this isn't Lincoln or the lost letters of Thomas Jefferson....

Love letters written by Mick Jagger to a 1960s muse have sold at auction for £187,250.

Sotheby's said a private collector bidding by phone snapped up the Rolling Stones frontman's 10 letters to singer Marsha Hunt.

Marsha is an American-born singer who was the inspiration for the Stones' 1971 hit Brown Sugar and bore Jagger's first child, daughter Karis.

The letters, touching on everything from the moon landing to John Lennon and Yoko Ono, were written in 1969 from the Australian set of Jagger's film Ned Kelly.

They had been expected to fetch between £70,000 and £100,000.

Sotheby's books specialist Gabriel Heaton said the letters reveal "a poetic and self-aware 25-year-old with wide-ranging intellectual and artistic interests".
