Sad to hear. I think it was Franz who developed the libero position. Rest in peace.

RIP Franz. It was such a pleasure to watch you play football. We have lost one of the greats, as a person and as a footballer.

Beckenbauer was surely a great footballer but rather a Dummschwätzer (German for a person who talks without thinking) than a great person - even when he talked about football.

PS: I once met him in person. Must have been in the early/mid 80s when I was in my early teens. He was nice and charming and I got his autograph.

Back in the late 70's, a junior Doxa was a proud owner of one pair of these:

RIP der Kaiser.

One of my heroes growing up. When I was a youngster my dad found out that the West German team were staying in Welwyn Garden City near London, ahead of their quarter-final match against England in Euro 72, then know as the Henri Delaunay Cup.

After school we drove up there and Franz and the team had just come back from a training session. My dad spoke with Der Kaiser, as he was known, and, I'll never forget this, he took me round to introduce to me to every player in the team who then autographed a huge poster I had made of the team with a photo of them in the middle.

A true gentleman that earned the respect of every footballer. R.I.P. dear Franz - you were one of the greatest footballers of all time.

Holy smokes, that is an incredible story Mike. If only he played for City smiling smiley
My brother got his autograph on a NY Cosmos pennant, along with Pele. I'll see if I can find it.

Disrespectful.. and why do you need the autograph of a Dummschwätzer?

I had a similar experience in the 80s at the Sportschule Hennef. The German team stayed there and a friend of mine asked me to come with him. I was not very much interested in soccer. He had a few black and white press photographs of Franz in the late 60s because his uncle worked for a lokal newspaper. When we met Franz he shook our hands, lokked at the photographs and told us "Ah, this was at the stadium in ... on ..." He remembered everything. Then he asked us if we would like to take some pictures with our most liked players and they came and made some funny faces or tricks with the ball. That's what I remember, a very friendly, down to earth man with great charisma. If you have met him, you know what I mean.

RIP Kaiser Franz

Re: OT: RIP Franz Beckenbauer

He was a member of the team that finished second at the 1966 World Cup, third at the 1970 World Cup and World Champion in 1974. He also won the European Championship with the team in 1972. And he wasn't just any player in this great team, he was the defining player. With a bit of luck, he could also have won the title in 1966 (irregular goal by England) and 1970 (refereeing error against Italy in the semi-final). But there were also negative aspects, such as his ill-considered comments about the allegedly non-existent human rights violations in Qatar. I believe that he regretted these statements in his final years. Because he was a philanthropist.

Undoubtedly a titan of 60’s and 70’s football.

All the genuine greats are now gone: Pele, Cruyff; Best and Charlton.

Now, Beckenbauer.

Rest in peace, Franz Beckenbauer
