I loved Hot Rocks more than Hot Rocks. (Although I guess Hot Rocks was a good primer if you were still a bit of a novice.) But More Hot Rocks really got deep into things. And there were a few cuts like Poison Ivy, Money, Fortune Teller, What to Do. (At least I don't they were).

It would interest me if I had to replace what I have, but that's the 2002 ABKCO SACDs and they're fantastic, even if I don't have a SACD player, the DSD layer does the trick.

In the case of playing it on a regular CD-player, it's the DSD mastering who does the trick (not the DSD layer).

It would indeed be interesting, when ABKCO would release Bob Ludwig's recent DSD remaster also on SACD or as DSD files (but the latter is rather unlikely).

Also on Tower Records: [Tower.jp] .

Release date: 29-Sep-2023.
I just noticed in the announcement from UM Japan that this will be worldwide release. Maybe another variant (with catalog number containing letter K) will appeared soon for the rest of the world. They did it for Hot Rocks and for SHM-CDs from In Mono box in 2022. That one (with K) might be cheaper for EU customers considering elimination of S&H from Japan and VAT/Import taxes. Although, current offer from jpc.de does not look promising in terms of price.

But it's € 29.99 at [Platenzaak.nl] and [www.Bravado.de] .

These are better. Let's wait for amazon and FNAC winking smiley.
PS. It would be interesting to check if BRAVADO provides correct information about mono/stereo versions.

Yes. This is another 50th Anniversary re-issue. It might be considered as a complementary to that Hot Rocks 1964-1971 [UICY-79767/8]. And also loosely connected to 50th Anniversary re-issues of Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) UK [UICY-79022] and Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2) UK [UICY-79023] from 2019. But these were Japanese only and are out of print.

Actually, the whole set of reissues in mini vinyl sleeves is very nice if you are a collector of stamps smiling smiley.

Sure, they would be even better if 7" sleeves were used but not 5".

This release of More Hot Rocks, as stated above, is 'SHM-CD in mini vinyl sleeve' reproduction of 2022 US/EU LP edition. I.e., with initial track list, without bonus tracks added in 2002. And I am positive it is mastered differently comparing to 2002 version.

My parents had "Hot Rocks" and played it all the time when it came out. I was only about 9-10 at the time, but the songs must have locked in my mind LOL. About 6-7 years later, my sister brought home "Some Girls" and I began to really get hooked on these guys LOL. It was another three years (I was 19) that I bought my very own first RS album - "Tattoo You" and shortly after that I picked up "More Hot Rocks" - what great compilation it was considering all the stone-cold classics from the 60s were already on the first set. I really enjoyed MHR - so much that it really got me on the journey to buying their entire catalog over the next year and being a life-long fan. They've been there for me like the sun and moon, it's going to be a very sad day when they hang it up - maybe I will be hung up too though LOL, we were both "established" in 1962!

So my question on this is, is it an improvement over the 2002 SACD release which I think is generally regarded as the digital highwater mark?

Probably not really, since this 2023 re-release is a normal Audio-CD (PCM 44.1kHz/16bit) while the 2002 SACD is based on the DSD format (2.8MHz/1bit).

But maybe some newer masterings by Bob Ludwig were used?

All recent releases are based on DSD tape transfer. But they were converted and downsampled to regular CDDA 44.1kHz/16bit.

Judging previous releases
- Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) UK [UICY-79022]
- Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2) UK [UICY-79023]
- Hot Rocks 1964-1971 [UICY-79767/8]
they utilized:
for mono tracks - 2016 mastering almost identical to In Mono box (other than small level shift). Some of those tracks came from the same tape transfer as 2002 SACD, some from new (but very similar) 2016 tape transfer.
for stereo tracks from TMSR, BB and LIB - mastering that was used for corresponding 50th Anniversary editions (plus-minus negligible level shift to fit the compilation). I.e., new mastering by Bob Ludwig. It is different from 2002.
for assorted stereo tracks (and singles from 1966-1969: Paint It, Black, Ruby Tuesday, LSTNT, We Love You, Dandelion, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women) - new mastering, different from 2002. In some cases (e.g. Time Is On My Side from Hot Rocks) it is obvious that they used unprocessed tape transfers. I.e., glitches and other tape defects were not cleaned like for 2002 SACD-hybrid editions and 2016 In Mono box.

I do not know if these versions can be called major improvements. They are different to 2002 versions. Some sound more natural, some a bit more rough and harsh. At least in one case (LSTNT) equalization is very unpleasant. On the other hand - stereo PIB is wider, comparing to 2002 version. Ruby Tuesday - correct mix with overdubs but different tape transfer and mastering with respect to Rolled Gold + (2007).

I believe on this More Hot Rocks they will follow the same pattern - mono tracks from In Mono box, stereo album tracks from TSMR, BB and LIB - 50th Anniversary editions, assorted stereo tracks - new mastering (not necessarily better than 2002, unless you like the approach Bob Ludwig used recently for Anniversary editions).

Currently for EU customers the cheapest option for the edition that will be sold around the globe (excluding Japan) are from FNAC France and amazon France - 27.99€.
Keep in mind that this edition might come without (or with shortened version of) Japanese booklet. Guess, this factor is not important to those who do not 'collect stamps'.
The same version (barcode 0018771215622) should appear for US and Canada too.

Track list is reverted to original. I.e., 12 tracks for CD1 and 13 tracks for CD2. No bonus tracks like on 2002 reissue.

Digital content: Remastered by Bob Ludwig. Based on recent reissues.

All mono tracks originated from 2016 tape transfer/mastering that was used for In Mono box. Here they got a 'cosmetic' lift. Like small changes in loudness to match the compilation.

Stereo tracks are new, not identical to 2002 versions.

CD1
04-It's All Over Now new tape transfer, not identical to 2002. Better separation of bass and trebles between channels.
07-Out of Time new tape transfer, not like 2002 version. It has a lot of hiss. Either they uses here an unprocessed digital file or tape transfer was done from an inferior tape source.
08-Lady Jane new tape transfer and mastering. The track is louder compared to 2002 and differently equalized. Also, it runs a notch faster.
09-Sittin' on a Fence new tape transfer and mastering. Different from 2002 version. For the first time the track in this form appeared in 2019 on Japanese only SHM-CD Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2), UK version [UICY-79023].
11-Dandelion new tape transfer and mastering. Different from 2002 version. For the first time the track in this form appeared in 2019 on Japanese only SHM-CD Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2), UK version [UICY-79023]. The stereo scene is wider here comparing to 2002 version due to better bass/treble separation between channels.
12-We Love You for the first time the track in this form appeared in 2019 on Japanese only SHM-CD Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2), UK version [UICY-79023]. Although, it seems that this version and the one from 2002 originated from the same tape transfer they are different. The track from 2002 has loud ‘click’ by the end of the track (4:16) in the left channel. This sound was removed in 2019. Also, equalization for 2019 (and 2023) track is different.

CD2
01-She's A Rainbow. A kind of copy-paste from stereo version of 50th Anniversary edition of Their Satanic Majesties Request (2017) but without carnival intro. Also, the track was adjusted in terms in loudness. These adjustments were not done uniformly. I.e., parts of the song with vocals were made louder (more compressed) comparing to the others. For the first time the track in this form appeared in 2019 on Japanese only SHM-CD Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2), UK version [UICY-79023]. Tape transfer and mastering approaches are different to 2002.
02-2000 Light Years From Home originated from stereo version of 50th Anniversary edition of Their Satanic Majesties Request (2017). Different tape transfer and mastering compared to 2002.
03-Child Of The Moon apparently originated from 2002 tape transfer. Tracks from 2002 and 2023 CDs stay in sync. Although 2023 version is equalized differently with respect to 2002.
04-No Expectations originated from 50th Anniversary edition of Beggars Banquet (2018). Different tape transfer and mastering with respect to 2002.
05-Let It Bleed originated from 50th Anniversary edition of stereo version Let It Bleed (2019). Different tape transfer and mastering with respect to 2002.
06-What To Do new tape transfer and mastering with respect to 2002. Track has wider stereo scene due to better bass/treble separation between channels.
12-I Can't Be Satisfied apparently originated from 2002 tape transfer but is equalized differently.
