On of my top 10 bands.

Very sad indeed. He has had a challenging life.

Watched an awesome Pogues gig at the Olympia in Paris on youtube some time ago. Amazing band. Great songs. Lovely Shane.

Sad news, even it does not come totally unexpectedly. Rest in Peace Shane MacGowan. A life with ups and downs has come to an end, his artistic legacy will remain. Prayers go out for his soul.

It has been sad for 30 years. But thank you for those wonderful albums. Hope you find peace now.

Really just a sad 8 years. After Pogues split, Shane did a couple more albums w/ The Popes (both excellent, imo) - and did tours w/ them (I saw them live, a few times - great shows!). He also did a huge amount of guest appearances for other artists, and then The Pogues reunited for regular tours after 2000, so I got to finally see live Pogues shows - I even went to a show after Shane was injured and had to perform in a wheel chair.

This feels almost like a personal loss. Shane’s music was some of the first I heard when I was a kid and it/he really spoke to me. I saw Shane/The Pogues at least 15 times over the years and spoke with the man on a few occasions. A true poet. RIP Shane we were blessed to have you.

A great character and an even better songwriter.
I saw The Pogues several times back in the day. I count myself very lucky...
The gigs at The Barrowlands Ballroom, Glasgow are the craziest I've ever attended. Absolutely wild..and no matter how lubricated Shane was, he always delivered.

There’s a killer Pogues boot from Barrowlands on YouTube.

RIP Shane.

A real talent and a real waste. The surprise that it didn't happen sooner. Julian Temple's film "A crock of gold" was a good portrait of the man and his appetite for self destruction.

I attended the first show of the Pogues in a small room in le Forum des Halles in Paris in 1985 with many english people in the audience. The next year they played at La Mutualité and Shane was already drunk for half of the show. During the concert he went to puke backstage before turning back. A pity because the Pogues had really could songs with Rum, Sodomy and the lash. Best show from them was at Le Zénith in 1988 wth Joe Strummer ans some guy of the Specials as guest. Setlist included London Calling and Message to you. One of the best gigs I attended ever. In 2012 the Pogues played at the Olympia and released this concert. Shane was overweight with years of drinking. He was looking like an old bouncer but his voice was still there.

Memories are made of this.

Paul Weller perhaps summed it up best in his brief tribute.

"...what a life mate ! "
