Rolling Stone picks Live Licks for top fifty

Records of the Year
The editors of Rolling Stone magazine pick the top fifty albums and Live Licks is on the list.
The magazine comments:
"At last: an official Stones live album that makes up for the sorry excuses of the past three decades. The greatest hits snap and snarl with renewed authority, and the deep set-list archaeology on Disc Two -- "Neighbours," "Monkey Man," "Rocks Off" -- is worth the price of admission by itself. The extended lightning of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," a nightly highlight of the 2002-03 tour, should be required listening for the Jam Band Nation."

As the editors have not included Tom Waits´Real Gone they can not have put much effort into the list. On the other hand it is nice to see that live recordings by my favourite band still moves hearts. The entire list can be seen here: [www.rollingstone.com]

Cheers,
Gunnar

That's great. It's also in the "2004 Essential List" in the free Danish music paper called Musicbuzz. Also it was in the "Essential List" in B.T. (Danish tabloid) in the list of the reporter Henning Høeg.

Rocks Off is worth the price alone............ Rolling Stone Mag. is not what it used to be!

I'm still listening ot it
on a regular basis, so that
says a lot to me. It's a fun,
rocking rolling stones cd if you
put all the other "considerations" aside.

Maybe they didn't notice the hack job on "Rocks Off".

They cut the best bit out the middle of the song. Ive not played anything from that album since I heard Rocks Off. Cut and paste!

I'm with you on that. The hatchet job on "Rocks Off" is probably one reason NOT to buy it.

with the exception of 3 or 4 songs on it..Live Licks was a dissapointment........40 Licks was worth it..and so was the DVD, especially.......but sometimes Rolling Stone brown noses it a bit much me thinks..........

Live Licks is the most charmless Stones live album ..... Ever.

is this the same 'Rolling Stone' that gave 'Goddess in the Doorway' a 5-star review and told the world to 'prepare for Mick Jagger - Solo Artist' ??

yes, and speaking of another cd I refuse to buy, I saw rarities in a shop today for 7.50 Euro. but than I was thinking about the frontcover with Bill Wyman edited out in true Soviet style, and didn't buy it.

a good enough excuse not to buy it as the band didnt even consider the record worthy of listening to first!

I'm capable of opening my eyes and seeing the same songs released a year earlier on a fantastic live DVD souvenir, thank you very much. It somewhat renders an edited version released on a live album obsolete.

Sad, irrelevant mag which is a mouthpiece for Justin Timberlake. The last good thing Rolling Stone ever did was that Janet Jackson hands on blips cover in 1993.

I was kind of bummed that Live Licks was just taken from the Four Flicks shows. It gives you the idea that they didn't really want to work on it.

I've never really liked Live Licks. Selection of the songs is good, but... Neither of songs on the 1st CD is the best version ever. You can find at least one better version of each song on previous CDs. And 2nd CD... Well, Neighbours, Rocks Off, Beast of Burden, WTWCD. Ok, they are good but if you listen to bootleg versions from 78/81 you will hear that LL versions just lack energy. The only highlights for me are Can't You Hear Me Knocking, That's How Strong My Love Is and The Nearness of You.
And another thing: that's a shame that Stones just took stuff from Four Flicks. They had so much material to choose from.

Did they really say that? Jesus... The fools...

I always thought that mag was ok, but a mental statement like that just shows their stupidity.

I'm surprised by the lack of opinions of the Stones, themselves, for the Live Licks CD. Mick mentioned it on two interviews, but only 2 lines and the rest of the band never said anything about the whole thing.
For Flashpoint, Stripped or No Security we had many interviews with the band talking about them, but nothing about LL.

Gosh...the original post on this thread was from 2004. How'd it get here? I was wondering how 'Live Licks' would be one of the Top Fifty albums from this past year.

that in itself speaks volumes for the quantity of their input

Pretty hard to comment on a record youve never even listened to.
