Gram's Honky Tonk Women is pretty fine as well.

I agree that Otis' Satisfaction is the best Stones cover, bar none.

I also would love to hear those Crowes covers if anyone would be kind enough to post them.

Otis was great!
Did you ever hear "Waiting on a friend" played by Hu Jay on the Album "Paint it black - Reggae Rocks - A Reggae tribute to the Rolling Stones"( rec. in Kingston/Jamaica)? The Song sung by Hu Jay is great and funny, too. Amazing cover song!I like the the "Huhu´s" very much.

I think that I may have some of those Crowes covers. If I can find 'em, I'll definitely post 'em! smiling smiley

I know that I have Silver Train and Honky Tonk Women by them but I'm not too sure about Torn And Frayed. Gotta check.

I thought I'd tell everyone what the WORST COVER IS! Nora Jones' version of " Wild Horses" blows! Plus, this song is not meant to be sung by a woman! And she didn't even have the brains to change the lyrics from " graceless lady" to graceless baby or something similar! ( unless she's singing to a lesbian lover and that's another different category of romantic possibilities!).

Is this an album studio version or some performance that she has taped live?

Deanna Carter does a somewhat good version of "Ruby Tuesday". But I'm not crazy about warhorse covers...its bad enough when the Stones play them to death.

It's an album Studio cut and if I'm not mistaken, it's on the new Tim Reis cd that I just bought after Christmas. Tim plays great sax on Stones tunes, most are instrumental but the Nora Jones obviously has a vocal, if you can call her version a " vocal performance!" I hate her dreamy, almost sleep-inducing voice anyway but this is terrible.

Hard to pick one, so heres a few :

Roger Chapman (ex-Family) - Lets Spend The Night Together (not well known but worth tracking down)
Otis Redding - Satisfaction
Bowie - Lets Spend The Night Together
Oasis - Street Fighting Man
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Street Fighting Man (only on bootlegs from the Born In The USA Tour)
Marianne Faithfull - As Tears Go By (I actually prefer the 1987 version thats on 'Strange Weather' to the 1965 version). Saw her play it a couple of months ago with an orchestra and it was marvellous. She does a lovely version of Ruby Tuesday as well

Flying Burrito Brothers - Wild Horses

Steve earle's covers of Sweet Virginia, Dead Flowers etc in concert have been pretty good

Townes van zandt's version of Dead Flowers, as mentioned above, is also excellent

In general, the Stones' songs that have a country arrangement tend to be made for good cover versions

When I say Gram´s version I actually mean the Flyin Burrito Bros.
Just heard Ramones SFM for the very first time; though I´m
sure no big Ramones fan, this song rocks.
..Covers b y Stones: Now listening to Dont Be Cruel with Keef
(the one Lady Sssoul recently posted), it has a nice groove.

I really like Nora's version of WH. Lots of feeling, but must be in the mood for something mellow to listen to it.

Some great punk versions are
1. Under My thumb, Backstreet Girl by Social Distortion
2. Citadel by The Hangmen
3. Street Fighting Man by The Ramones
4. The "Lets Get Stoned" cd from the Chesterfield Kings is an absolute classic!! The whole album is Stones related.
5. Jiving Sister Fanny by Izzy Stradlin (GNRoses solo)

stone-relics:

I played bass with the Flamin' Groovies for about a month in '79 before they fired me because I wouldn't quit my other gig (Sylvester). Roy Loney, the lead vocalist, was the one who invited me in and then let me go. A good guy, no doubt.

And FYI, the drummer for the Flamin' Groovies (the guy with the blond hair and rimmed glasses) really thought the world of Charlie Watts (he told me so). One thing I loved about that drummer: he had a bass drum, a snare, a high-hat, a regular cymbal and one tom-tom, nothing else. When I asked why he didn't have more gear, he said: "Too much temptation."

What album is the Groovies' version of JJF on?

Interesting... i think that GnR version of Simpathy really really sucks (due mainly to the vocals), and also their version of Jumpin' Jack Flash (the rithym section just isn't much into that number). Aretha's Jumpin' Jack Flash is really great, though!
