R4 programme on Get Yer Ya-Yas Out @ MSG

Great programme on the making of Get Yer Ya-Yas Out (and the earlier one in the series on the making of Clapton's unplugged was also really good, with a lot of input from Clapton himself).

It should be up on bbc iplayer soon enough. Ironically, one comment made during the programme is that the $7.50 ticket cost was considered unusually high. So what's new?....

Get Yer Ya-Yas Out!
Series 7 Episode 3 of 3
Duration: 30 minutes
First broadcast: Saturday 20 October 2012
Paul Gambaccini is back with the award-winning series to re-visit three more occasions when a classic live album was recorded. He hears from those who were there, on-stage, backstage and in the audience, to re-create the event for all of us who, each time we play the album, think: 'If only I could have been there'.

Paul Gambaccini re-lives Thanksgiving 1969 when The Rolling Stones played Madison Square Garden and recorded an album later reviewed as 'the best rock concert ever put on record'.

In the company of many who were there on the night, including the tour promoter Ronnie Schneider, sound engineer Glyn Johns, Mick Jagger's assistant at the time Jo Bergman, Chip Monck who looked after the lighting, tour manager Sam Cutler, photographer Ethan Russell, and rock journalist Michael Jahn, Paul Gambaccini re-creates the occasion.

Also in this series of For One Night Only: 'Clapton Unplugged' (1992) and 'The Weavers at Carnegie Hall' (1955)

Producer: Marya Burgess.

Just listening now. Sam Cutler tells this story of them being terrible at the first show in Ft. Collins, then in the ensuing 10 days before the LA shows, they rehearsed hard and got it together, except it doesn't seem to be true. There was no lay off at all according to the Rocksoff setlist site, they played LA the next day. It does however, fit the lay off between Champaign, IL and Detroit 8 days later as evidenced by the "We Never Got it on Till Detroit" bootleg.

All in all a very worthwhile listen.

Any mention of the overdubs?

Oh no, just got the Meredith Hunter killed during Sympathy story.Really, the best part is simply hearing the voices of Jo Bergman, Glyn Johns, Schneider,Cutler (still sounds the same) and so on. No full tunes, but not bad. And no, nothing of overdubs.

It seems Taylor's rhythm parts on LQ and OC are dubbed by Keith. I don't believe it.

One of my favorite music recordings and one of the greatest RnR recordings ever. Like many other people when the deluxe edition was released I patched the songs together in the order played and used Chris M's version of SFTD (with the missing verse spliced in) to complete "the show." A joyful and satisfying task!
