Today, Neil plays in Central Park with Crazy Horse but while in the City he stopped by Lettermans show and talked about ...his new digital music player? Ending World Hunger and Poverty?
As usual, Neil beats to his own drum and sure surprised the hell out of me!

As someone with a degree in Electrical Engineering I can't help but think that no matter how accurately sampled and bit-length represented, digital music is still digital music. I mean he must be referring to something like 192,000 samples per second and maybe 64-bit word lengths. We're talking 64 1's and 0's laid down 192,000 times for every second of recorded music.
Yes that seems to theoretically represent more than a human ear could distinguish but I'm still not convinced. Someday even that will seem like a trifle. But no doubt it seems a better format than the crap CD digital that has been force fed to us.
It seems Neil is trying to do some justice to the artists of the 70's and earlier who recorded onto magnetic tape and have been at a loss to represent that music effectively with the CD market. It certainly won't make music recorded at CD quality and better, mp3's will still only deliver 5% of the information. His player isn't going to ADD stuff to the songs to try to get better fidelity.
Maybe the missing piece of the puzzle as far a music representation is concerned has to do with magnetic fields. Somehow they have to be included in the technology to get the same effect the magnetic tape recordings give us. That deep warm bottom end and such. I mean magnetism is orders of magnitude stronger than even gravity, so obviously it is a powerful force. Our bodies are tuned in strage ways to the earths magnetism, etc. Just thinkin.... peace
